Cape Town has become a hot spot for carjackings, according to crime statistics released by the SAPS. The statistics show the Harare and Nyanga police stations recorded the most number of incidents between July and September, the second quarter of the 2023/24 financial year. The stats show that 114 people were carjacked in Harare and 82 in Nyanga. Protea station in Johannesburg was the third most likely place to have your vehicle hijacked, with 81 reported cases for the same period. A KwaZulu-Natal woman who was found guilty of killing her older sister, a police officer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Bongeka Somani, 43, was found guilty in the Scottburgh Regional Court of murdering her sister, Sergeant Nokuthula Somani. The 55-year-old was shot dead while seated in the lounge of her Umzimkhulu home in April 2022. Provincial spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks), Simphiwe Mhlongo, said that Sergeant Somani was stationed at Umzimkhulu police station and had been off-duty on the day she was murdered. “She was sitting in the lounge at her Umzimkhulu home when two suspects entered the house and shot her multiple times. ELECTRICITY Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has insisted that the country will need almost R400 billion for grid expansion to accommodate renewable energy projects to improve energy supply. Ramokgopa said Eskom’s balance sheet was not in a position to fund the grid expansion project. He said the expansion of the grid would have to be ramped up compared to the current rate. This would mean increasing it almost tenfold from the current 300km of transmission lines being built to 2 300km a year. The energy crisis is taking a heavy toll on the country, with Ramokgopa saying recently load shedding costs the economy R1bn per day. Western Cape cops have issued a warning about an increase in the sale of dagga-infused sweets to children amid a R100 000 bust in Ottery on Friday morning. Grassy Park station commander, Dawood Laing, said the early morning raid of two homes owned by a couple resulted in their arrest and the seizure of various items known as “edibles”. The Independent Electoral Commission in the Western Cape is pleased with the outcomes of the voter registration weekend, despite being barred from doing its job at two voting stations in Philippi and Marikana.
