POLICE are probing a horrific shooting near Atlantis, which resulted in the death of five young men and leaving another five wounded on Wednesday night. The incident resulted in the closure of Old Mamre Road, as police scoured the scene for clues and grieving families arrived to find their loved ones fighting for their lives. A 70-year-old British tourist’s rescue from Platteklip Gorge on Table Mountain has prompted authorities to reinforce hiking safety measures as summer approaches. Teams from Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR), including both professionals and volunteers, responded to the call to assist the injured hiker on Tuesday afternoon. At around 2pm, the hiker and his wife were close to reaching the summit of the popular trail when he lost his footing and fell backward down the steep stone steps. A FIRE at Table Mountain’s lower cableway station left 400 visitors stranded, but quick action by firefighters ensured their safe return yesterday evening. City firefighters extinguished the fire along Tafelberg Road, after it was reported just after 1pm. The City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said a bank of lithium batteries caught fire in the afternoon. “The fire has been extinguished, but staff remain on-site to ensure that the batteries do not reignite, and that the area is safe,” Carelse said. ANNUAL consumer price inflation (CPI) declined to 3.8% in September, its lowest level since March 2021, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said. This was mainly led by lower fuel prices, which decreased for the fourth month in a row, leading the transport sector into deflationary territory for the first time in 13 months, with the annual rate falling from 2.8% in August to -1.1% in September. Food inflation remained unchanged at 4.7%, while housing and utilities rose by 1.1%, largely thanks to electricity prices having risen by 11.5% over the past year. LATE Judge Willem Heath has been commemorated in a memorial ceremony in Durbanville, where a number of high-profiled guests paid tribute to him yesterday. The ceremony took place at the Stellenberg Dutch Reformed Church. Heath died on Wednesday, October 9, at the age of 79. One of the people who paid tribute included Dr Iqbal Survé, chairperson of the Sekunjalo Group. Survé said he was saddened when he got the news of Heath’s passing.
