A poem reflecting my thoughts which echo the sentiments of the writer in his letter captioned “Facing the Abyss: the challenges of 2024 and beyond” (Cape Argus 2 December 2024).
The Memory of Man
And now the trees reigned. Nature’s buildings.
The plants stirred restlessly, uncertain.
Only the wind spoke, confused.
Frightening silence. What remained looked startled.
Leaves, seeds, pollen – the Earth’s living.
The buttons were pressed. Warnings of the abyss ignored.
Our duty as gatekeepers of creation in tatters,
Fear, hate, man-made frictions were no more.
Only the beauty of nature’s living wild remained,
A world of gentle movement, ripples of serene freedom,
A freedom to grow in whatever place,
To feed and blossom wherever chosen,
To develop, strive without malice, prejudice, conditions,
With no regard to class…
