This past year has seen many photographers going from one extreme to the other. As COVID restrictions lifted there was an explosion of weddings needing photographers. Melbourne’s Ashley Karakatsanis thrived in this new climate. “I'm busier than I’ve ever been. I’m getting three to four times the number of enquiries and bookings compared to before. I’m also getting an insane number of last-minute bookings. It’s good, and I’m not complaining at all,” she says. Other wedding photographers like Katie Harmsworth, also based in Melbourne, have found adjusting to the changed market more challenging. The CMO Survey early in the year indicated that 2022 budgets would be spent 56% in online channels and 44% offline. Television and radio captured some of that nearly 50-50 split. Out-of-home (OOH) advertising grew for an obvious reason; people were out and about again, and they did it with gusto. Interest in print and press advertising showed some growth after years of decline, perhaps because the digital world has become overloaded. Brands need to stand out. The shift, though, has been subtle. Social media advertising still dominates and the pool of physical magazines and papers has declined since world’s “great culling”. Editorial photography took a significant hit during COVID and has been slower to recover than its advertising sibling. This is partly due to the famed “democratisation of photography” with work spread over a wider range of photographers and especially so in fashion and documentary photography, where discovering new talent has become a trend. The report, State of Photography 2022, by Tara Pixley, Martin Smith-Rodden, David Campbell, and Adrian Hadland, found that 55% of respondents globally were supplementing their income with something other than photography and more than half indicating that they now carry a “great deal” to a “moderate” amount of debt.
