Although technically labelled a concept, the Up! GTI embodies the punchy, lightweight ethos of the Mark 1 Golf GTi, essentially the forefather of the modern hot hatch. In GTI guise, Wolfsburg’s pint-sized hatchback features a three-cylinder, turbocharged 1,0-litre engine that develops 85 kW and 200 N.m; good for a 0-100 km dash in 8,8 seconds and a 197 km/h top speed. Among this model’s GTI cosmetic accoutrements are a purposeful-looking body kit, suspension lowered by 15 mm, the signature red pinstriping on the grille, a roof-mounted spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, a chunky, leather-bound sports steering wheel, and the classic “clark” tartan seat panel finish are further nods to the car’s GTI pedigree.
