Three cars had me considering my fantasy garage this month. 1925 Miller 122 A purpose-built front-engined (and FWD) supercharged racecar which entered the 1925 Indianapolis 500 endurance race. American-made FWD production cars never became popular, however. 1929 New Era Motoring Ruxton At a time when no American carmakers were building FWD vehicles, Ruxton swam upstream. THE entrance to Fanie du Preez’s garage is lined with neat glass cases exhibiting a collection of model cars. In an impromptu fit of nostalgia, Fanie shows me the exact car he played with as a boy: a 1950s Mercedes-Benz 219. He even has pictures of him as a six-year-old playing in the gravel with that exact model car. As we wander through his collection, it’s evident Fanie has a predilection for Mercedes-Benzes from the ‘50s to the early 2000s, but there are a number of other carmakers’ wares scattered among the battery of Benzes. UPON arrival at the midway point of our Texan test drive, the sight of “Job 1” – the first-ever example of the original W163 Mercedes-Benz M-Class that rolled off the brand’s Alabama-based production line in 1997 – made me smile. Quattro (the numeral four in Italian) is an Audi trademark first used on the 1980 Quattro coupé. Since then, the trademark has been attached to the nomenclatures of many of the Ingolstadt-based firm’s vehicles to denote their utilisation of all-wheel drivetrains. When the company’s first production electric vehicle, the E-tron SUV, goes on sale, it will also bear the Quattro label. This time, however, the four-wheel drive is achieved by virtue of having an electric motor mounted at each axle (with combined outputs of 300 kW and 664 N.m). The calibration of the electric Quattro system has a local flavour: Audi used a salt flat in Namibia to tweak the system. HALOGEN A bulb with glass envelope (similar to the household item) operating on the incandescent principle. Usually, a tungsten filament is employed in the glass housing filled with a mixture of an inert gas (like argon) and a small amount of a halogen (as listed on the periodic table, such as iodine or bromine). The “halogen cycle” redeposits the evaporated tungsten back on the filament, which prolongs its life and keeps the glass envelope clean. This results in the production of constant light throughout its operating life. LOWER-SPEC ISUZU ENGINE FOR SA? I am a huge fan of Isuzu and currently own my third KB bakkie (2015 KB300 D-TEQ Extended Cab LX 4x2). I find it hard to believe the Australian-spec 3,0-litre D-TEQ (430 N.m vs. 380 N.m locally) cannot operate in SA due to our supposedly poor-quality diesel. The 4JJ1-TCX is an old-school engine which can run on 500 ppm diesel. How is it possible that other manufacturers’ models, especially the Germans, with more modern engines and higher specific outputs, can operate on our “bad” fuel? POWER REQUIREMENTS AND FUEL USE A couple of years ago, CAR published an article explaining the formulas to calculate the power needed to drive a vehicle at specific speeds. I’ve been exploring drive-style improvements and what they do to my Toyota Land Cruiser 4,5’s fuel consumption and the results in town-driving have been an improvement from 20,0 to 13,0 L/100 km. My problem is during open-road cruising, where I cannot get below 14,0 L/100 km, and this hurts the holiday fuel bill to Zambia. Would an overdrive ratio of 25% help? The Nomad was planned to be a very basic bakkie in the interests of affordability (it was meant to cost as little as R1 400). However, inflation was a big problem in those years – in the order of 10 to 15% per annum – so the eventual launch price was R2 950. HARLEY-Davidson is known for launching new models with unerring regularity. Apart from all the updates, changes and colour options, most owners tend to personalise their bikes to the nth degree, which means it is unlikely you’ll ever find two Harleys that are exactly alike. In the next few years, Harley will roll out radically sporty-looking new models, including a fully electric motorcycle dubbed the Livewire. For now, though, we get a taste of what’s to come in this recently released FXDR. AUTOMATIC TROUBLE Jacobus Pretorius had a tough upbringing. His parents were strict and did not allow modern computer games into the house.
