The 2019 Formula One season got off to a very sad start with the sudden loss of Charlie Whiting. The outpouring of grief from across motorsport said everything about the love and respect for a man who was Jack of several trades and master of them all. STOP/START SYSTEMS I would like to comment on the modern stop/start systems in many of the new cars. I drive a 2009 Mercedes-Benz C200 which is not equipped with this feature and often wonder what saving can be realised by switching off the engine while stationary at traffic lights. What extra cost is added to the sticker price of a new car with this feature? The system consists of a beefed-up starter motor and battery plus all the control electronics to achieve the numerous starting events during every drive cycle which my C200 does not have. Achingly lovely, the 507 should have been a rousing success for BMW, but the opposite proved true. Instead of the 5 000 units BMW had hoped to sell annually, just 252 examples left showroom floors across four years of production. It was simply too expensive to buy and brought the German carmaker to the edge of bankruptcy before industrialist Herbert Quandt (his descendants still own a significant share in BMW) rescued the company. The moment I clap eyes on it as I walk through the beautiful arched entrance of BMW Classic, the parked CSL leaves an indelible mark. BMW’s E9 coupé is unquestionably one of the 1970s’ prettiest automotive shapes. The same can’t be said of the CSL because some of these cars, especially those fitted with the optional aerodynamic package, were manufactured to fulfil the homologation rules required for its racecars. However, this challenging surface is an excellent proving ground for the capability of an all-wheel-drive system. Kia says the Sorento’s Dynamax AWD system, supplied by Magna, features intelligent torque vectoring and has enough heat tolerance to withstand continuous use. This was put to the test on the white dunes in Atlantis where the Kia exceeded expectations. TRACING AN OIL LEAK I recently restored a classic Honda motorcycle and the project was a huge success, apart from one annoying problem: an untraceable oil leak. If the bike is parked for a couple of days, a drop of oil reaches the ground. It is a small quantity but, as it is a collector’s item, I want it to be perfect. At first inspection, I thought it is leaking from the sump plug, but I have changed the washer a couple of times without success. Is it possible the oil leaks from somewhere else? In the late 1990s, Daihatsu had not one but three 4x4 vehicles on sale simultaneously. The Terios was the most affordable at R99 999; this was followed by the three-door, 1,6-litre Feroza at R109 999; and finally, the Rocky 2,8-litre at R136 033. The Rocky was a two-door using a non-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine with a power output of 72 kW. The latter two had a soft- and hard-top rear enclosure that could be removed.
