OIL-PRESSURE LIGHT I drive a 2017 Mahindra 2,2-litre S6 Pik Up with 6 000 km on the clock and, so far, I am very happy with it. There is only one problem I have noticed and it has to do with the oil-pressure light. When starting the engine in the morning, the light takes about four seconds to go out. While driving the vehicle, it stays off, indicating the oil pressure is adequate. Switching off the engine after it reaches operating temperature, it takes just two to three seconds for the oil-pressure light to go off upon restart. Bearings are manufactured to tight tolerances down to a thousandth of a millimetre depending on the bearing size and type. A term called “internal clearance” points to the relative movement of the outer to the inner ring. Interestingly, the internal clearance may be greater than the operational clearance specified for the bearing. This is because the interference fit locating the bearing either expands the inner ring or compresses the outer ring (or both), thereby reducing the internal clearance. As the 2020 Grand Prix season gets underway, all 10 teams will have half an eye on next year. Formula One will undergo its most substantial technical change since the adoption of the hybrid power-plant in 2014. While the engines will remain more or less the same, the emphasis this time will be on the chassis, specifically the effect of aerodynamics. SOME FREE WISDOM A reader recently asked me to explain why we often manage to solve problems that other workshops cannot. I think the main reason is I have not fallen into the same trap as so many other garage owners. This is best explained by what I call the stages of workshop deterioration. A workshop is usually started by a single mechanic who no longer wants to work for a boss. If he is experienced and honest, he will make lots of money and soon progress to the stage where he can afford to get an untrained assistant to help with the jobs where extra hands are required to do the dirty work. CYLINDER DEACTIVATION I recently thought about a basic concept to reduce emissions and fuel consumption by temporarily reducing the number of operating cylinders in an engine. Would it be possible to “switch off” one cylinder from say a four-cylinder engine by the engine control unit or even a button on the dashboard? The result is when in the deactivated state, the three-cylinder configuration would improve consumption and cut unnecessary power. What is your take on the feasibility of this idea?
