Greetings CAR readers. Wow, 65 years of South Africa’s biggest and best automotive magazine. That is 781 magazines – and it would’ve been 782 if it weren’t for the combined April/May mag in 2020 owing to the coronavirus. It was the only time in our history that there has ever been a combined issue! That’s a whole lot of motoring, and it has me reflecting on everything the car industry has been through of late: COVID-19 restrictions, semi-conductor shortages, missed build slots and production delays. I wonder if previous editors like Robert Key or John Wright could’ve foreseen such an occurrence back then. Yet, somehow, the cogs in the machine have kept turning. With our diamond 60th anniversary, we elicited much reminiscing and encouragement from past editors. We also enjoyed perusing special advertising artwork from the manufacturers who have been supporting us for many years, some from our beginning. Behold, the startling result of what happens when BMW X meets M with no limitations. To say BMW’s design department is not afraid to shake things up of late – with the new 4 Series, 2 Series and iX – would be the understatement of the decade. Versus this new Concept XM, however, the penmanship of the aforementioned comes across as positively tame. Even compared to its namesake, the controversial-forits-time Citroën XM (European Car of the Year in 1990 if you’re a French car anorak), the BMW XM looks like it hails from outer space. Colin Lazarus was at Le Mans in 2016 when a Ford GT scored its historic victory in the GTE Pro class to once again beat out the Ferrari challenge, just as it had done 50 years before in the world’s most famous motor race. “I watched 23 hours of that 24-hour race and the emotion was absolutely indescribable. Ford had taken the lead with about four hours to go and I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the event in their hospitality area. One would have thought that with 65 years under our steel-reinforced belt, the CAR staff would have been there, done that and seen it all. The last two COVID-19-impacted years have proved this inaccurate. The surprises keep on coming. We take a look at what has transpired in those 65 years, where we are now and then take a peek at what to expect in the next 65. Unchartered territory, we now enter. One inevitable certainty is the replacement of the internal-combustion engine with the electric motor, of which we've driven plenty. True, it’s not at all new. We have to recall the past once again to join the dots to the future. Clever engineers produced electric cars as far back as the early 1800s. These pioneers knew what the future ought to hold, if it were not for the heavy limitations of the lead-acid battery. These were too heavy and too short-lived. Speeds were pedestrian and distances expected to be covered, low. Sales peaked in the early 1900s but then waned as a result of the consumer’s need for more speed and a much longer range. Toyota South Africa celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2021. Okay, that’s not quite as impressive as CAR’s 65 years … but it’s not like we’re keeping score, or anything. Nevertheless, we sought out a uniquely South African story to mark the occasion and came upon Nico Fourie’s collection of Toyotas. It is fascinating how some enthusiasts have a special love for a brand or era of car. There could be any number of reasons for this. BMW’S CARMELEON BMW has used this year’s Consumer Electronics Show to showcase what it describes as the next level in automotive customisation; a system that allows owners to instantaneously change the colour of their car. This iteration of the company’s iX Flow electric SUV is wrapped in a film that’s closely related to the E-ink system used in several e-readers on the market. It features an electronic paper base impregnated with black and white pigmented microcapsules the width of a human hair. The white capsules are negatively charged, while their black counterparts carry a positive charge. When a fluctuation in the electrical field actuated by the user control is applied, it moves one or the other to the surface to create specific hues and patterns. Four days after he had won the F1 World Championship, Max Verstappen received the coveted trophy at a glittering ceremony in Paris. As he posed alongside his boss (Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner) and Jean Todt, outgoing president of the FIA, the absence of Toto Wolff from the official photograph told the story of a hugely controversial championship denouement that continued to fester. The World Rally Championship (WRC) was never more exciting and chock-full of memorable machinery as it was during the Group B era of the 1980s; a time when the cars were considered more wild and outrageous than their F1 counterparts, coining the phrase “Formula 1 for the forest”.
