PORSCHE CAYENNE DROP-TOP Twenty years ago, Porsche was trying to figure out whether or not a convertible version of its Cayenne SUV would be a viable product, so it built one. Legend has it there were two factions that couldn’t decide on what the rear end was supposed to look like, and that’s why this rolling prototype had a famous asymmetrical backside. One group of designers thought it should have the more conventional low-set taillights of the Carrera GT supercar, while the opposing set believed in a new-age rear end with taillights high up on the beltline. The Bavarian brand has come under fire in recent weeks following the introduction of a subscription plan for certain features, namely heated seats and steering wheels, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. Here’s the gist of it. Niceties like heated seats and steering wheels will be used only at certain times of the year. For the rest of the time, you probably won’t even think about activating those items. These features will form part of the company’s ConnectedDrive Upgrades, which BMW believes could be a major alternative revenue stream. APL McLaren Hyspeed ■ R11 421 Athletic Propulsion Labs (APL) and McLaren have collaborated on footwear as bold and flamboyant as the firm’s supercars and hypercars. The APL/McLaren Hyspeed shoes adopt the automaker’s performance-oriented design language. Drawing inspiration from the marque’s many illustrious nameplates, the Hyspeed is a luxurious example of athletic footwear. The silhouette is a completely new design developed by APL, composed of three layers. At the very bottom are APL FutureFoam pads located in the front and rear of the shoe. Above is a carbon-fibre plate stretching across the length of the shoe, topped by a nitrogen-infused midsole. It’s one Audi is looking to answer with the help of Germano-Indian tech start-up Nunam, which envisages using second-life e-tron EV batteries to power shorter-range mobility solutions such as rickshaws. “The old batteries are still extremely powerful,” says Nunam cofounder Prodip Chatterjee. “For vehicles with lower range and power requirements, as well as lower overall weight, they are extremely promising.” Electric rickshaws aren’t completely alien to the subcontinent, but these use lead-acid batteries and are charged via a coal-powered grid.
