But there also seems to be an increasing number of people using these ‘homes’ on wheels for specific humanitarian causes as well. What better way to house the homeless than to repurpose old vans to provide a roof over their head? Or give people in abusive situations a safe place to go to in times of danger? There are any number of people currently roaming this country in their RVs. Some are on the road full time and some just travel for part of any year whenever the mood takes them. In recent times, I have learned about plenty of people who don’t just travel for pleasure but use their RVs for helping others. For instance, there are RV-related organisations including the Australian Motorhoming Lions Club (ALMC) which recently organised the Guinness World Record attempts on the Largest Parade of RVs and the Longest Line of Rope Lights (see News from page 10). Tow vehicles seem to be both an increasing subject of conversation within various magazines and on social media, and an increasing subject of confusion. It's because caravan weights are getting heavier but also because a number of tow vehicle manufacturers are supplying maximum towball mass/tow rating/GCM (Gross Combined Mass) figures where a bit of simple mathematics has to be applied. Up until a couple of years ago, Avida only produced a range of on-road or semi offroad caravans. That changed last year with the introduction of a full offroad caravan in the form of a 6.4m (21ft) family van complete with bunks. This year, at the Sydney Supershow to be precise, Avida introduced a slightly longer model, the 6.58m (21ft 7in) which is definitely aimed at couples.
