The New Forest is a remarkable place and from my first visit I found myself enchanted by it. I’d never visited this part of England before, so whilst organising an autumn trip to Devon and Dorset I decided to tag Hampshire onto the end before returning home to Northern Ireland. The day of our arrival in Norfolk was a write-off. It rained all day and all night. But the following morning we awoke to grey skies and uncertainty about the day ahead. ‘Showery’, the forecast said, so we decided to head for Castle Acre Castle and Priory, where we could nip under cover if the rain came. The castle is free to explore and comprises impressive earthworks, arches, ramparts and the remains of the keep, all connected by footpaths and wooden bridges. There’s also a dry moat.
