Q&A WITH JANE Q. I’ve been experimenting with watercolouring lately but my images always seem to look washed out, any tips? A. The most important item, whether you’re colouring a whole background or just a small image, is to start with good quality watercolour paper and mediums! I personally use 300gsm watercolour paper, it’s thick and doesn’t buckle with lots of water. Most brands have a smooth side and a textured side, it depends on what effect you’re after. Some paints will appear bright when applied but will dry lighter, so let the first coat dry completely then add another coat over the top for a deeper shade.
