By the early 1950s, the country wanted to get back to the life it knew before the war. And that meant racing – but where? Airfields were largely redundant, and if not smashed up to help with hardcore for rebuilding and a return to farming, then some could be used for racing. Snetterton, Silverstone and Thruxton are the main survivors, but dozens have had shorter lives as circuits. Army bases too, like Blandford, the first racing circuit after the war, have had a go, and Eppynt, the Army training area, hosted racing for more than five years.
