How to CHECK YOUR BATTERY Diagnose why your battery isn’t holding its charge with this simple guide. When a good battery can’t start your classic after it’s been standing for a while, it may be down to something draining the battery. The bigger the drain, the faster the battery will become discharged. Before assuming it’s battery drain, though, check the following. Faulty battery If your battery’s healthy, it’ll give about 12.4-12.65 volts. With everything turned off, use a multimeter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals. If it’s less than 12.4 volts, recharge the battery. Do not carry out this test if the battery’s recently been charged via your classic’s own system or a mains charger — it’ll give a misleading figure that’s higher than normal. To get around…
