ENGINE Signs of a terminally-tired V6 are heavy breathing, blue smoke and low oil pressure. Inspect the cooling system, as a poorly maintained Essex is prone to overheating and blowing the head gaskets. Overheating also ups the risk of the fragile fibre timing gear shattering. Together with the oil pump drive failing, the timing gear is the V6’s main weakness and both should ideally be replaced if the history doesn’t document a change. Steel timing gear is much stronger than the original, but it’s not cheap and louder. Weber carburettor rarely gives issues, but a worn one can be refreshed with a rebuild kit at circa £35.…

BLOWN AWAY Just received my copy of the May edition and wanted to thank you for featuring my Escort RS1600T. When my wife rang and said, “It’s on the cover”, I didn’t believe her until she sent me a photo. QUERY OF THE MONTH ’Box swap Q I recently bought an Anglia Super and I have since stripped the car completely in readiness for welding. My thinking is to fit a 1600 Crossflow and a 2000E gearbox, but I’ve been told you can fit 2000E ratio gears into a 123E gearbox. Is there anyway I can tell if he has already done this before I go to the trouble of sourcing a 2000E ’box? The gearbox has several casting numbers: 105e 7006c, 7 K 10 A3, and the tab reads 105eb 7 K 18, but I guess they have no bearing if the inside has been changed. ENGLISH RACING AUTOMOBILES KEEPING IT LOCAL The infamous ERA concern was originally co-founded by tuning guru, Raymond Mays in the early 1930s, and up until the mid ’50s produced some incredibly successful single-seater race cars. Jim bought the rights to the name a few years back, and as well as the ERA HSS and 30 sports cars, the name now appears on a few select parts that Tiger produce, including the distinctive Lotus twin-cam-style Zetec cam covers (pictured below in pre-machined and painted form) as well as cast alloy sumps. “There were originally based down the road in Bourne, so it feels right that we’ve been able to keep the name local,” explains Jim.…
