PINTO IN A FIESTA? Q Do you know which Ford had a 1.3 Pinto in it? I would like to get one for my Mk1 Fiesta but don’t have a clue what car they came in. Neil McDonnell Email A The 1300 Pinto is a mainland Europe-only engine fitted mainly to the Taunus Cortina (right). However, this is possibly one of the most unsuitable engines you could ever want to fit to a Fiesta. Not only is it underpowered (and heavy), it would be practically impossible to install unless you are planning on converting your Fiesta to rear-wheel-drive. MOTORSPORT MONTE CARLO or BUST Some 40 years ago this month the works Fiestas debuted on the Monte Carlo rally, and unwittingly helped shape Ford’s future direction in motorsport. Words Graham Robson Although the front-wheel-drive Fiesta was launched in 1976, and went on UK sale in 1977, Boreham was in no hurry to develop it for rallying. The first road cars weren’t very quick, but the USA-market Fiesta launched in 1978 was fitted with a five-bearing Crossflow engine so perhaps there was hope. INTERIOR Cloth of higher-spec models is less durable than vinyl of lesser variants. Replacing the cloth is harder than the vinyl too, although ruby red and dark green shades of the latter can prove difficult to match. Some seat covers have been remanufactured, while reproduction carpet sets and headlinings are also available. Often-warped doorcards are difficult to replace, although black versions can now be bought new. A cracked dash can only be rectified with a second-hand replacement. What are the main things I can do that aren’t going to be extremely expensive? I’m willing to spend money, but not silly amounts. ENGINE “THE MK3 EDGED INTO A DIFFERENT MARKET SEGMENT; SWALLOWING UP BUYERS OF THE DEFUNCT CORSAIR” Sure signs of wear with either Kent engine are noisy valvetrain and a rattling time chain, but its bore and piston wear that is terminal. It’s easy to spot the symptoms — heavy breathing, blue exhaust smoke and high oil consumption. Look for the same signs of advanced wear with the Pinto, although it’s more likely to have camshaft wear originating from the lubricating spray bar being clogged by old oil. The giveaway is a tapping noise from the top of the engine. Cambelts need changing every 30,000 miles and watch for signs of overheating as the Pinto’s water pump corrodes if the antifreeze mix is wrong.…

Some (more) front Old Skool Ford Drag Challenge welcomes pre-1990 Fords There’s big changes afoot for the super-popular, Ford-only drag race series, the Old Skool Ford Drag Challenge (OSFDC). FRIENDS REUNITED The Capri Friends Luxembourg hosted their second European Ford Capri Revival Meeting during August in Ettelbrück, Luxembourg. The successful event regrouped around 130 Capris from seven different countries including cars from the UK, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and also Switzerland. The main theme of the event was centred around the 50th anniversary of the Capri and the showground displayed a Time Tower around which one Capri of every year built was displayed. MOTORSPORT EIFEL RALLYE FESTIVAL With eye-popping ex-works entries, the Eifel was an uplifting experience for rally fans.
