history: rallycross capris FOUR TO THE FLOOR How Ford’s rallycross Capris became TV stars thanks to their four-wheel-drive antics. Words Graham Robson I will never forget those fearsome works rallycross Capris of the early 1970s, even if their traction was a lot more impressive than their cornering ability. It was Henry Taylor, Ford’s competition manager from 1965 to 1969, who invented them. Although the original Escort Twin Cams had made such an impact in 1968, on muddy tracks they were often beaten by powerful front-wheel-drive Minis, so Ford really needed better traction to match them. They have the ability to build anything you want in widths currently down to 47 inch (flange to flange) using parts off the shelf. ENGINE “FORD RECKONED THE MK2 WAS LONGER, WIDER, SAFER AND MORE REFINED THAN THE MK1” A tired 1.3-litre Kent engine will have a noisy valvetrain and timing chain, but more of an issue is piston and bore wear, which will be obvious from blue, oil-tinged exhaust smoke, heavy breathing and a thirst for oil. Terminally worn Pinto engines have the same symptoms, although more common is camshaft wear as a result of the lubricating spray bar being blocked by old oil. The giveaway is a tapping noise from the top of the engine, although if it’s a heavier ‘clacking’ sound the wear is more advanced.
