While Concours always attracts some stunning cars and is a hotly contested competition, it’s important that the show constantly evolves and it’s been decided that the show instead focus on making the Show & Shine contest the best of its type. Alloywheel cleaners If you’ve just spent all your hard-earned cash splashing out on the perfect set of rims for your Ford, you’re going to want to look after them. Most alloy wheel cleaners are acid-based, and while this is great for cutting through dirt and brake dust build-up, covering your wheels in acid on a regular basis is not ideal. And it’s a huge no-go if your wheels are polished, diamond-cut, or chrome-plated. Instead, there are plenty of specialists wheel cleaners available to choose from, all with slightly different characteristics. For example, products such as Meguiar’s Hot Rims and Auto Finesse’s Imperial cleaners are great at removing dirt and brake dust with little effort from coated alloys.…

STEEL WHEELS There are plenty of Ford steels, including 5.5x13 Lotus rims and their more ordinary cousins, 4 inch and GT 4.5s plus these later rims that have half a dozen names. I’ve always known them as Tinilites, Steve calls them that or, dart board wheels although their proper name is Road Sport wheels. Whatever, they’re available in various widths and are getting more sought after simply because of the driven-up cost of Lotus rims. Plenty of aftermarket wheels have varying offsets so if you’ve bought them used, chances are they’ll clout, which is what wheel spacers are designed for — packing out the difference and providing clearance so your wheels will fit.These are standard pattern available in a variety of thicknesses. ALLOY COMPOSITION The composition of an alloy wheel dictates its characteristics.The most common is a derivative of an aluminium alloy called LM9.This includes magnesium, copper, silicon, and titanium, amongst other elements.This is a very strong yet light alloy, which makes it perfect for both motorsport and road use.The alloy is also heat treated after the wheels are cast to further alter its properties.This process improves tensile strength and hardness of the alloy, but in some cases this can actually make the wheel too hard for a desired application, so not all wheels need to be heat-treated. CENTRE LOCK WHEELS “DIAMOND CUTTING INVOLVES SKIMMING THE SURFACE OF THE ALLOY RIM TO REVEAL FRESH MATERIAL” Unlike conventional wheels, centre lock rims don’t take their drive from the wheel studs. Instead they feature either a splined centre that mates to the wheel hub, or have drive pegs in the hub that slot into the back of the rim.A centre-locking nut then holds the wheel to the hub. TRACK DAY TYRES Many tyre manufactures now offer road-legal tyres aimed for use on track days.These tend to feature a higher rubber content than traditional road tyres, and tread pattern designs with minimal grooves to ensure the largest possible contact patch with the road.The result is far superior grip, especially when up to operating temperatures.The best performing track tyre is likely to be a slick design using incredibly soft rubbers, but as these are simply no good in wet and slippery conditions they are not road legal. DIAMETER Diameter is fairly self-explanatory and refers to the outside diameter of the rim. Fitting the biggest set of wheels you can find is necessarily the best idea in terms of performance. Bigger wheels require lower profile tyres to keep the rolling radius as close to the original as possible (in order to keep the gearing correct, and not to affect the suspension geometry too much). Also bigger wheels weigh more than smaller ones, so you will increase the unsprung weight, which is a bad thing in terms of performance.…

UNSPRUNG WEIGHT Unsprung weight refers to anything on the road side of the suspension springs. Typically this includes the hubs, driveshafts, brakes, and the wheels. By fitting lighter wheels you will reduce this weight. This has many advantages, including quicker turn-in, shaper steering response, and better braking. On motorsport applications, in particular rallying, where the suspension is worked exceptionally hard, having a lighter unsprung weight puts less stress on the dampers. By lightening the unsprung weight, you effectively reduce some of this stress put on the dampers, meaning they will perform better and last longer.…

Inserts The centrebore of a wheel is the diameter of the hole in the back that fits onto the flange on the hub. Most modern wheels are hub-centric, which means that the centrebore will fit tightly onto the hub, transferring the load onto that component. With this set-up, vibration is massively reduced and the studs or nuts do nothing other than hold the wheels on. The other type of wheel is the lug-centric version where it’s the studs or bolts that take the load of the vehicle, because the centre bore doesn’t always fit snugly onto the hub. It’s not uncommon for mass-produced aftermarket wheels to feature a larger-than-required centre bore size, which is then shimmed back to the required size using plastic spigot rings.…

FINISHES The aluminium alloys used to produced wheels offer many benefits, such as strength, light weight, great heat dissipation, and so on. But one thing they don’t offer is protection from the elements. Therefore alloy wheels need to be coated or treated to ensure they can cope with the road salts, brake dust, water, dirt, oxidisation, and general muck that they encounter on a daily basis.The most common finishes are either paint or powdercoat, or a mixture of the two. Painting is quick, easy, and relatively cheap, but powder-coating offers better durability and resistance to stone-chipping or flaking. Bolting the wheels on Next thing we need to consider is what type of wheelnuts you’ll need; usually determined by the format of the bolt holes — again, these are Fiesta SuperSport four spokes, which have a countersunk/tapered seat; therefore, you need corresponding wheelnuts. Earlier wheels and similar of the same era, can use square-edged bolt holes — RS2000 four-spokes for example — although Capri Laser use tapered ones — it gets a bit confusing this; attention is needed or simply go by the wheels you have and ring Steve! But as a guide… …you will need tapered seat wheelnuts on tapered seat four spokes — as in SuperSport and Capri Laser. …and wheelnuts with a flat washer and collar for virtually everything else — but again, go by the…

AFTERMARKET ALLOYS These look like Dunlop D1s at a glance but they also appear a touch unfamiliar too.That’s where the PCD gauge comes in handy at an autojumble… …because these are 101.6 mm — close but no cigar.They are in fact rare Leyland Special Tuning wheels from a Marina rally car. And these lovely ATS Classics… …were also available in Ford fitment, but a quick go with the PCD gauge again and they are 4x100 mm PCD meaning Vauxhall — probably off a Manta GTE. Probably the most famous of the breed is the Wolfrace alloy — and will state Wolfrace-on them, although there were subsequently loads of different makes. The majority use Wolfrace pattern bolt fixings with 30 degree tapered seats and a bore size of either 16.3 mm…

THE WHEELS ISSUE FANTASTIC FOUR 15 inch wheels on a Mk1 Escort is always a talking point, and the fact that Dan’s running RS four-spokes is a surefire head-turner… as genuine RS four-spokes were 13 inch in diameter. “Being a bubble-arched car, I always thought 13s looked a little lost,” he explains. “The previous owner, Gary, had the car on 10x15s! They were huge, but I bought the car on 8x15 inch Minilite replicas. I was never too keen and had always hankered after a set of split-rim four-spokes but couldn’t afford them; however once I saw JBW were doing an 8x15 inch RS4 design I had to have a set! I’ve had them on the car three years now and still love the look of them — period-correct, but…

THE WHEELS ISSUE FRESH STEEL To get the correct look for his Zephyr, Kev found a set of Mk4 Zodiac steel wheels, then had them banded - widened by the use of a band of steel inserted into the centre of each wheel — by Duchy Banded Wheels and Powdercoatings.Widened from 5 inches to 6.5 inches the wheels are finished in Stork Grey since Kev likes the colour, it matches the steering wheel and,“Silver painted wheels can look really cheap if they’re not done correctly.”Wrapped around them are 195/75R14 narrow band whitewall tyres from North Hants Tyres. Finally, a set of original hubcaps were sourced at four separate autojumbles,“I was a bit nervous when I’d only found three of them,” laughs Kev.…

ONE TO SHARE OUT AND ABOUT IN THE CORTINA Displaying the 1300 at classic shows around Devon, the Hawkins also enjoy sharing the car’s sentimental value with other Ford connoisseurs.The Cortina’s everyman status means that the Deluxe is never short of admirers. “Older people in particular look at you, wave and beep. It’s lovely to see people admire it,” she says. “People chat about where they use to go, what they used to do, and it’s just nice. When we can bring back memories for people, thoughts of happy times and family times, that means as much as anything!”…

How are tyres made The process of building a tyre starts with the steel beads. These are then encapsulated in rubber and form the tyre bead as we know it, and provides the starting point for the rest of the tyre to built upon. The next step is the tyre liner, which is a non-porous nylon-reinforced rubber used to form the basic shape of the tyre. This creates an airtight seal between the steel beads so the tyres can be inflated – hence needing to be made from a non-porous material to prevent moisture in the air escaping and thus deflating the tyre.
