LOTUS AND FORD THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP Colin Chapman (above left, with Keith Duckworth) founded Lotus Cars in 1952 aged just 22; a superb design engineer he was obsessed with reducing weight on his racing cars. Among previous Lotus employees were Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth — founders of Cosworth. When in 1962 Ford released the five-bearing 1498cc engine Duckworth aided in tuning development of the engine that was first used in a Lotus 23. Ford subsequently asked Chapman to fit a 1558cc version to 1000 Cortina saloons for Group 2 homologation and the Lotus Cortina was born. Ford wanted to continue the Mk1’s success with the Mk2 version but had concerns over build quality. With Lotus moving from Cheshunt to Hethel, Ford opted to move Lotus Cortina production to Dagenham.…

Words Graham Robson Months after the pioneering London to Sydney Marathon in 1968 had made the headlines, a much more ambitious event — London to Mexico City — was launched. Dubbed the World Cup Rally, to link up with the football extravaganza, the route aimed to join the 1966 venue (London) with the 1970 venue (Mexico City). The title provided a good excuse for a marvellous motorsport event, and attracted the Daily Mirror as main sponsor. The route wound east to Sofia in Bulgaria, then back through Yugoslavia, Italy, France…

IN THE 8s GOING FAST — WITHIN THE RULES Shadi’s very happy with his 8.3-second run, which is what the car was built for. And it’s interesting to note that drag times run in brackets when it comes to build regs; there are a lot of safety regulations around drag racing, as you might expect, and if you’re planning to run a car that can smash the quarter-mile in 8.5-seconds or under, there are certain things you have to do or they won’t let you play. Regulations demand the rollcage be fabbed from 1 5/8x0.118 inch mild steel or 0.083 inch chromoly tubing, and you’re not allowed to grind your welds. So is Shadi happy at 8.3, or will he push for more? Only time will tell……

PARTING SHOT LOOKING TO THE PAST ONE CLASSIC IMAGE AT A TIME MARATHON MISSION The World Cup Rally (see page 78) wasn’t the first trans-continental endurance rally that Ford threw everything into. In 1968 they fielded a team of nine cars (three Lotus Cortinas, three Taunus and three Falcon GTs) on the monumental London To Sydney Marathon, which took in 10,070 miles with no scheduled rest halts between the London start and Mumbai in India. LIKE YOUR CAR! PAUL ROUSE 1962 XL FALCON FUTURA Paul Rouse is a serious car enthusiast who decided that a 1962 XL Falcon Futura was a special Ford that he would like to add to his collection. The XL was the first facelift model of the Falcon and it saw the introduction of the new Futura model, which was effectively a Deluxe with all the options added.
