Appearing in September 1980, original XR3 sported carb-fed 95 bhp 1.6 CVH engine, Bilstein dampers, 5.5x14 inch cloverleaf alloys, rubber front and rear spoilers, wheelarch spats, colour-coded bumpers and mirrors, and Laser-striped upholstery. This One’s Mine To say that John Grieve has a passion for classic Fords would be an understatement. He’s owned so many, he’s lost count, and his current fleet is made of up three examples including an Escort XR3i convertible and a Mk2 Escort Ghia (“Though I’m off to see another car tonight,” he chuckles). A LITTLE OF WHAT YOU FANCY FORD, AND ONLY FORD His teenage years may have been soundtracked by howling Cortina abuse, but after his early dalliances Stephen moved on to own a broad variety of diverse Fords. After the silver Crusader came a couple of Orions, first a 1.3 GL and then a Ghia Injection. Then followed an Escort Combi van, a Mk2 Fiesta XR2, and a couple of Sierra XR4x4s. Pause for breath, as then it was time for the Mondeos — a Mk1 GXL, then an ST200 — before moving on to a Series 2 Escort RS Turbo, a Sierra RS Cosworth, and a Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4, the last of which he still owns. FOUR THOUGHT THE V4 FORMATION Most four-pot engines put their cylinders all in a row, but Ford isn’t the only manufacturer to experiment with using a V formation. The design goes back to the 1890s and was enthusiastically adopted by Lancia, who used a V4 for their breakout Lambda model before returning to the concept for the 1960s Fulvia coupé. The bent-four is also an ever more popular layout for performance motorbikes. Car racing has also seen a recent V4 revival, thanks to Porsche and its 919 LMP1 prototype sports racer. The Le Mans-winning design coaxed over 500 horsepower from its 2-litre engine and used the compact V configuration to make the most of the available engine bay space.…

GRAND DESIGNS THE ON-POINT INTERIOR The interior of this Escort is so perfectly judged, we just love the period-perfect vibe that’s been created by fusing together so many correct ingredients. The Contour bucket seats are artfully complemented by a half-roll cage, something which doesn’t intrude upon the rear bench too much, but at the same time speaks volumes about performance prowess. The 140 mph Twin Cam clocks are a necessity, given what’s going on under the bonnet, while the RS four-spoke wheel and wood dash trim are oh-so 1970s Essex. WICKED WHEELS ’80s MOTORSPORT CRED The Mk2 was never going to retain its standard skinny steels, but what to fit? This One’s Mine In her late teens, Claire Delacey Nörenberg drove a Capri Laser followed by a 1.6LS, but what she really, really wanted was a Tickford Turbo. 10 years ago, Claire was finally able to fulfil that dream, when she was tipped off about one for sale by a friend. “It was everything I was looking for,” Claire recalls, “and as soon as I saw it, I wanted it.
