FORD’S TWIN-CAMS FORD’S TWIN-CAMS From the start of the ’60s, Ford has lead the way with its twin-cam engines. These seven powerhouses reveal why. LOTUS TWIN-CAM Ford’s first foray into a production twin-cam engine, the Lotus-designed eight-valver was based on the Cortina’s 1500 Pre-Crossflow bottom end, but with a cast alloy head. Blocks were bored to 82.5 mm from the standard 80.96 mm, and like the BDA there have been many derivatives so you need to know your stuff. For instance, the Mk2 versions having a thicker casting to more reliably carry the increased capacity that allowed 1558cc. These later engines also had square mains caps —the same as 711M-block Crossflow’s proper oil seals as opposed to the Mk1’s fiddly rope-type, and stronger 125E conrods. INTERNAL AFFAIRS UPGRADING THE ZETEC Since our shoot Gary has had his engine in bits again after popping a water pipe at RS National Day in his first session. This resulted in a cooked head gasket and badly-warped head! The car now has a freshly ported and polished head to a new race spec by AL Developments, while he’s also upgraded to ARP head studs and nuts rather than using stretch bolts. “The limiting factor of my engine was the well-known weak Zetec oil pump, so I’ve taken this opportunity to upgrade this to an aftermarket external oil pump set-up,” Gary tells us. “This will make my bottom end safe to rev over 8000 rpm without being a ticking timebomb!”The Fiesta will be going for an updated remap and a…

SAVAGE BEASTS THE RACE PROVED CORTINAS Jeff Uren was initially a racer for Ford but after a stint as their Rally and Competitions manager he set up Race Proved Performance and Racing Equipment Ltd, constructing, amongst others, the Cortina Savage. Most of Mk2 Cortina Savages were based on the 1600E, along with a few Lotus and Estate models, but Race Proved’s conversions began on 1500GTs. The engines were 3-litre Essex V6s as fitted to Mk4 Zodiacs, tuned by Westlake Engineering. Chassis rails were seam welded and fitted with a Corsair V4 front crossmember. Brakes were uprated as was suspension with stiffer springs and shocks, negative camber, revised mountings and anti-roll bars. Despite double the engine size only 56 per cent of the weight was over the front wheels and handling…

GARY’S SIX-LINK AXLE SET-UP The front brackets are placed at a height to suit the ride height and overall wheel diameter, with the multiple location holes allowing rear steer of the axle, going from toeing-in under roll, or toeing-out. Toeing-in on the loaded wheel makes oversteer less of an issue — it’s like the advantage of modern multi-link rear independent suspension, though of course, in Ben’s case it will be toeing-out for sideways action. The multiple positions also let the owner set up the car for anti-squat — this allows more power to be put down by using the links as levers to lift the whole chassis under the torque reaction of the axle. LIKE A BOSS THE BLUE OVAL SALOON SERIES Keith races his Capri in the BOSS series. Run by the Classic Touring Car Racing Club (CTCRC), BOSS stands for Blue Oval Saloon Series, and it’s a championship whose regs ensure impressive diversity: entrants must use a steel production shell, and an engine either manufactured by Ford or another company copying the original Ford design (for example, a Millington Diamond instead of a Pinto). Gearbox casings have to be Ford’s own, although entrants can make changes to the internals.There’s also free rein on suspension springs and brakes. THE AFTERMARKET OPTIONS HOLBAY/WARRIOR 16-VALVE Originally designed by Holbay in the early ’70s as a cheaper alternative to the BDA, the 16-valve alloy head conversion for Pinto blocks has been in and out of production for years. Well-respected engine builders, Connaught took over the design and manufacture a couple of years ago, refining the design to make it stronger and easier to maintain, and now that the Holbay/Warrior conversion is eligible for Historic rallying, some Escort RS1800 competitors have swapped it for the original BDG, as it’s cheaper to build (and rebuild). There are a few in road-going cars, but you need deep pockets for one — they do look and sound amazing, though. FITTING A DURATEC IN A CLASSIC FORD Parts are available off the shelf through Retro Ford and SBD Motorsport to do this swap, such as engine mounts to fit a lowered rack mount World Cup crossmember. A rear-wheel-drive wet sump is available, and as with the Zetec, the Duratec has a rear-protruding water rail, which needs modifying via a redirecting manifold to miss the bulkhead. You will also need an alternator kit since the standard Mondeo unit has its regulator pack within the ECU — you probably won’t use this by opting for aftermarket induction. As the engine is a Mazda design, the bellhousing bolt pattern is not the same as regular Ford, dictating an aftermarket item to mate to either a T5 or Type-9 — although the latter will…

LOST, SORT OF FOUND I bought this Escort, OMR 235G for £1000 in 1997. Apart from the rollcage the car was fairly standard. It was originally a 1300GL auto, which is what I was looking for to get the bigger gearbox tunnel. I spent two years working on the car in a poly tunnel I built beside my house. There was actually no vehicle access to my home at the time so the local haulage company that had collected the car used a hiab crane to swing the car over a large hedge and drop the car into the garden!
