CLASSICS FOR CARERS EVENT SMASHES FUNDRAISING TARGET A pioneering, stay-at-home charity classic car event has proven to be a massive success. Classics for Carers, which encouraged owners to display their classic cars at their own homes, smashed through its £1500 target to raise almost £16,000 and counting for NHS Charities Together. The event was the brainchild of Nick Chivers, a classic car owner and enthusiast with friends who work in the NHS. With so many events cancelled or postponed due to Covid-19, the idea was that fellow owners would buy the event’s rally plate or sticker and affix it to their classic car or bike, with the profits from each sale going to the charity. THE ENGINE REBUILD CVH WITH ADDED FINS The engine in Alan’s RS1600i is a sublime mix of originality and subtle tweaks to contemporise its perky performance. These hopped-up CVHs, with their distinctive finned rocker covers, put out 115 bhp in factory form, but this one is producing a healthier 125 bhp. SEA-FRONT FIESTA I was flicking through the May/June edition of Classic Ford and the Grafters feature on Sam Mould’s Mk2 Fiesta project caught my eye because of the colour and the patina that looked rather familiar. I wondered if it was a Mk2 Fiesta that had been an almost permanent fixture at my workplace that had recently disappeared? OUR CARS THE LATEST NEWS ON THE CF PROJECT VEHICLES Project XR3i With work commencing on the Mk3 Escort, we tackle its rather loose rear end. “WE WENT FOR THE STIFFEST BUSHES, REASONING THAT THE REARS ARE THE HARDEST-WORKED” We signed off last issue with the suggestion that social distancing might put paid to plans for having any work done on the Escort, but for once we’d been well-organised and managed to squeeze the car into the workshop before the lockdown took effect. QUERY OF THE MONTH REAR DISCS FOR CORTINA Q Is there a rear disc brake conversion for the Mk4 Cortina? Greg Emmott UK A There isn’t an off-the-shelf kit, as such, but you can adapt parts from other Fords, as described by the BuySellCortina forum: Source a pair of Scorpio/Mk3 Granada or Sierra rear callipers — the non-vented disc versions are easier and cheaper to find. For the discs use either Mk1 or Mk2 Fiesta, or Mk3 Escort 1.3 front discs. The Escort ones are preferable as they have a bigger offset and move the calliper away from the wheel allowing better clearance, and also have the added benefit of allowing the brackets to be further away from the flange of the axle which affords more room for welding.
