HANDLING TECHNIQUES SORTING THE SUSPENSION Escort-Tec builds are known for being more than just show pieces, so Darran and Mark put their wealth of knowledge to use when it came to the handling and grip. One of the keys to that early on was ensuring the wheels were placed correctly and the car was perfectly balanced. “The battle was getting it to sit low while still having plenty of grip. So before the arches were fitted, the wheels were moved forward and it was corner weighted,” explains Darran. “It’s because these arches are designed for 15-inch wheels with balloon tyres, so lowering the car moves the wheel back in the arch, which affects the handling.” The tension rod kit allowed the castor adjustment and the rest of the set up…

Here are the essentials The first job is a good healthy dose of lowering, which is dead easy on the standard front struts since springs up to -3 inches are available everywhere, and not just for RS-pattern struts. Basing your suspension on non-RS struts may well mean small-bearings — some even feature drum brakes while others have cast-in steering arms. But it’s a simple job to swap to better ones from a 2-litre Capri. If you plan on converting to 2.25-inch adjustable platforms (aka coil-overs) new ones are available outright, or fit an abutment kit yourself or hand the task to GAZ! MK1-MK3 CAPRI Think Escort, think easy upgrades The Capri’s suspension is almost identical to the Escort, which is good as it means there’s a wealth of easily adaptable parts to make everything as adjustable as you want. Bilsteins may sound sexy — and they bolt straight in — but they’re at a premium and, to an extent, a compromise! Mk3 2-litre struts can be better upgraded with adjustable platforms (whether DIY or off the shelf) and inserts to suit you. This means standard height or shortened are a simple swap away, and a Capri does benefit from a good 30 mm drop all round. Adjustable TCAs, top mounts, beefy anti roll bars, compression strut kits, and even power steering is available, either in kit form or swappable from more sporty…

HANDLING GUIDE MK1-MK2 GRANADA The bigger brother needs careful tweaks Granadas are one of the few classic Fords with double wishbone suspension all round — they have the room to fit the geometrically superior system in place and still retain areas for big engines. But it means a touch of searching to seek out the usual sea of kits for MacPherson strut-based cars. The usual lowering route is 30-35 mm dropped springs — these are available from AVO, while both companies produce complete spring and damper kits to both lower and uprate. Many favour dropping lower than this — to 50 mm is favourite, which can be done too — AVO produce a fully adjustable coil-over kit. LEAKY WHEEL CYLINDER A leaking wheel cylinder can often be spotted by peeling back the rubber dust covers on its outer edges. If brake fluid is found, the seals inside the wheel cylinder may need replacing, although the bore may need reaming if it’s scored. New wheel cylinders are often easier and quicker to fit than reconditioning an old unit. The work involved in replacing a wheel cylinder generally requires the brake pipe to be detached from it, followed by any mounting bolts before it can be manoeuvred out and the replacement fitted. Afterwards, the brakes will need bleeding and spray brake cleaner around the wheel cylinder to clean up any brake fluid.…

WING MIRRORED THE XR3’S BIG BROTHER Launched at the end of May 1983 and on sale in June the Sierra XR4i was the logical choice for a big brother to the Fiesta XR2 and Escort XR3. Using the Capri’s Cologne 2.8-litre V6 with Bosch K Jetronic mechanical fuel injection it was a full-size, rear wheel drive performance car with a luxury feel intended to bring glamour to the Sierra range. This may sound a bit glum but it actually means there’s a massive inventory of performance parts waiting to be bolted on. NEW SHOES If you need to replace a set of brake shoes, it’s worthwhile replacing all of them across an axle to ensure even braking efficiency. This can be an awkward and frustrating job. Whilst a pair of pliers and a few screwdrivers can help, there are dedicated tools, such as the ones from Rally Design. When replacing brake shoes, make a note or photograph how the old shoes are fitted. Carefully detach any springs, remove the shoes, then reassemble the brakes on a workbench before fitting the new components. HANDLING GUIDE MK1-MK2 CORTINA Easily adaptable using later Ford components Lowering is easy using Escort RS springs - roughly 180 lb ones for a Kent engine. Uprated inserts are available although GAZ can convert your struts to fully adjustable ones along with 2.25 inch ID springs. You can replace the lot with a bolt-in rack-and-pinion kit from Old Ford Auto Services (OFAS), converting to an Escort-based system although more recently we’ve seen Retro Ford develop a kit using the original struts coupled with hybrid Escort/ Cortina TCAs along with Escort crossmember and rack. Performance models featured sought-after cast TCAs rather than the pressed-steel ones, which are worth the money. Poly bushes for either pattern are available. Rear end It’s the usual lowering block route at the rear although plenty swap…

MK1-MK2 FIESTA A myriad of options From the factory, Fiestas suffer badly from body roll so the first steps should be a set of poly bushes, lowering springs and ideally, the meatier XR2 tie-bars and rear anti-roll bar. How low to go is up to you, but generally 50 mm is considered the ideal compromise between looks and handling and you should be looking at uprated dampers, too. GAZ are the favourites here. For serious handling improvements, invest in adjustable track control arms and tie-bars to allow camber and castor to be altered. Rear end The rear cannot be fitted with coil-overs, so if you’re intent on major height adjustment be prepared for some fabrication work. POLICE SCORPIOS The Scorpio feature in your April 2021 issue reminded me of my police patrol car experiences with a Cosworth version that was supplied from Ford for high-mileage testing back in the early 1990s.
