Paul Jackson may have had a long history of modifying his vehicles and initially his 1976 Escort Mexico rally car was no exception. Rallying was still something of a gentlemanly sport in the early 1950s. Companies tended to spend available funds on motor racing, and in Britain it was only Jowett, Sunbeam-Talbot and Jaguar (by supporting Ian Appleyard) who took things seriously. When it comes to talking about a car’s suspension setup, the term ‘sprung mass’ means everything inboard of the springs; that includes the bodyshell, engine, gearbox, anything inside the car (including the driver), and so on. The ‘unsprung mass’ is everything on the other side of the spring. For the most part, that weight is made up of things like wheels, tyres, hubs, wheel bearings and brakes. Other suspension parts where one end is inboard and the other outboard (such as suspension links, control arms, driveshafts and so on) can generally be considered as 50/50 unsprung/sprung. Not so long ago a 2-litre Sierra estate was a common enough sight, but even then the 4x4 version was unusual. In the past decade or so the 4x4 variants have become downright rare. Anew report by a major classic insurer, incorporating a Driving the Future survey of UK residents, suggests the biggest fear among today’s classic vehicle owners is environmental pressure. As the world makes its transition to a ‘greener’ motoring future, 49 per cent of respondents cited this as the classic vehicle movement’s greatest challenge of the next 10 years. Issuing its 2022 Indicator Report, insurance specialist Footman James commented: “As a motor-mad nation, we have been owning, fixing and driving our vehicles for decades and for many it’s become a way of life. Rarity is a highly-prized commodity among car collectors, particularly as we enter what might be the final phase of internal combustion for daily pleasure. In the realm of old racing cars, provenance is everything. There’s so much detail and nuance that can evaporate across the ages. Look at the rally Escorts of the 1970s – they weren’t built and maintained with an eye on future values or fastidious bookkeeping, they were built to win rallies; as parts were swapped and upgraded. So we see a Trigger’s broom effect whereby little original remains, and we end up in a situation where several cars all have equal claim to the same iconic registration number. When it comes to the armada of Escorts built by Alan Mann Racing (AMR) in the late-1960s, there are three in existence today with unimpeachable provenance. And this Mk1 Fiesta, was the wrong side of borderline. A iming to build on the reputation of its Supertouring cars and tap into demand for a high performance Mondeo, Ford announced the ST200 back in October 1998. Based on the ST24, the ST200 bettered the earlier Mondeo ST thanks to more power and a tweaked chassis, while it also benefited from improved equipment and exclusive styling touches. At the business end, the ST200 used a revised version of the ST24’s 2544cc Duratec V6.
