My goal here was to run in a freshly-built, race-spec 2.3-litre Pinto and test a selection of cams while running my 45Webers and eventually switch over to fuel injection.Why not go straight to injection? There are several areas where classic Fords all rot, one of which is the headlight rings. Mud collects around the tops of the buckets, attracts water and eats the steel. This Mk1 Cortina two-door didn’t look too bad, but primer on top of body colour meant there was something underneath: rot — and nicely plopped-up rot at that! The problem was the rust had got in the seam; joining the wing and front panel, which is the important bit of any Mk1 Cortina — lose it and it looks bad. Shrinker/stretcher Stretched and shrunken metal’s the cause of all dents and damage — getting them out’s where the skill lies. But you can make them work to your advantage — on right-angle sections, shrink/stretch one side and it’ll curve either way, allowing you to make for example a wheel arch lip. But deliberately shrinking/stretching is hard unless you have a purpose made tool. Using a set of jaws for each, the shapes you can create are unreal! Body rot The crucial factor that determines a project’s potential is rot. You need to be ultra-critical. Don’t be blinded by mint floors — if you find rot anywhere, dig deeper. You might be forgiven for thinking that the Cortina’s racing career ended with the Mk2 Lotus, but in South Africa they raced Cortinas as late as the Mk5 model. They weren’t quite the same as the ones we got in the UK though. For a start these Cortinas got the 3-litre V6 engine and there was a homologation version with three carburettors called the Interceptor.
