It doesn’t happen often, but every now again, a bespoke build comes along and stops you in your tracks. It’s even better if you’re least expecting it. No surprises, then, this is one of those ‘least expecting it’ moments. It started with a call from the boss, Dan Furr. Can I get my backside over to photographer Dan Sherwood’s gaff tomorrow? We’ve been here before. A different day, a different year, a different owner even, but the same 911, not that you would believe it. Or me, for that matter, despite being the Porschephile journo at the wheel both then and now. Rewind back to June 2019 and what’s now an eye-popping Shark Blue 993 Carrera RS replica was a rather more humble Carrera. It’s very much a project, though. Previous owner, Matt Rowley, determined to create his own vision of a lightweight 993. As you’ll note, the word ‘vision’ will crop up. Indeed, it’s what this 911 is all about, but as with so many things in life, vision comes in all sizes. Japan-domiciled Australian, Marcus Rebeschini, makes quite the statement. “I gotta say, I hated that car,” he says, referencing his fully restored 1974 Carrera 2.7 MFI. “It became too perfect. This Carrera beats the MFI hands-down. The history, the stories, the condition. It’s why I love this car much more than I felt for the MFI.” MFI? Time travel, so I thought, was the reserve of science fiction, but this late 1988 911 Turbo (930) has proved me wrong. Fresh as the daisies springing up in the surrounding Oxfordshire countryside, the car has recently emerged from a two-year recommissioning and bodywork restoration process carried out by air-cooled Porsche specialist, Mike Champion Engineering (MCE). In a way, this is a story of two icons of the automotive world. Most hardcore Porsche enthusiasts will recognise the first: the four-cam Carrera engine. This formidable flat-four equipped a handful of high-end race and road Porsches in the manufacturer’s early years, not least the 356 A Carrera GT Speedster, the 356 B/2000 GS Carrera 2, the 550 RS Spyder and the 904 Carrera GTS. It’s not just water (in a traditional engine) that needs to be kept cool. Motor oil, charge air in forced induction applications, gearbox oil, differential oil and, in some cases, power steering fluid, all absorb heat as they work and therefore need to be cooled, but a number of variables affect the characteristics of cooling equipment. Most cooling products, including water radiators, intercoolers and oil coolers, work in a similar way. The water, air or oil to be cooled (working fluid) is passed through a cooler, which is (or should be) situated where it receives a constant flow of air as the vehicle moves forward. What constitutes a classic 911, anyway? Given the 911 is now sixty-odd years old, most 911s manufactured qualify as classic. Even the 997 is officially categorised as a classic. In the summer of 1952, Porsche’s engineers began designing a new air-cooled engine with far more potential than the pushrod unit the company had so cleverly adapted from the Volkswagen pushrod four. The Stuttgart concern had done well with the latter, which produced 78bhp on gasoline (for long-distance racing) and 98bhp on alcohol with a high compression ratio (for sprinting), but the engine had reached its limits at a time when the opposition was getting its act together.
