Welcome to the September issue of Classic Porsche magazine, where — as you’ll discover across the following pages — we highlight the fact more than seventy percent of all the Porsche sports cars ever manufactured remain on the road today. Climb the Porsche ladder of aspiration and what will you find at the top? Obviously, the answer depends on what you aspire to, but for most Porschephiles, it’s gonna be a 911 Turbo. Maybe even more so considering the model recently hit the big five-zero. Yes, if anniversaries make you feel old, then you might want to move along. The Ferdinand Piëch era in Porsche racing began with the 906 in 1966, accelerated with the 910 of early 1967 and shifted into high gear with the 907, launched in the summer of 1967. Determined to raise Porsche’s racing game, Piëch encouraged his designers to reach for the best (and often most exotic) solutions available. The 907 first appeared as a coupe. At launch, it was regarded as the most bizarre and striking race car to leave Werk 1 in Zuffenhausen, not least because this particular Porsche was built to make its debut at Le Mans and to excel on Circuit de la Sarthe. When we eyeball a freshly restored Porsche with a view to presenting it in our pages for audience perusal, we try to ascertain the most challenging part of the restoration. Often, we hear tales of long-obsolete parts proving difficult to find. Unanticipated corrosion is also a popular fixture of these conversations. In readiness for the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ferdinand Piëch and his team worked wonders with the long-tail 917. Just before the cars were sent off to France, I got the opportunity to test the 917 allocated to me. I did so at the Porsche test track, located at the company’s motorsport and development centre in Weissach. Even though this was a handling course (as opposed to a high-speed track), and despite the fact the car already had its Le Mans gears in situ (meaning I never used fifth), I broke the unofficial track record.
