In many respects, 1987 was the year analogue met adrenaline. Petrolheads lived in a world of poster cars, unfiltered driving experiences and mixtapes blasting Guns ‘n’ Roses, Depeche Mode and Public Enemy through tinny cassette decks. Acid-washed denim and bomber jackets were the uniform of choice at late-night service station meetups populated by radically styled four-wheelers. Group B’s ghost howled through forest stages and Japan’s new breed of sports car was threatening to challenge the supremacy of European marques. Turbochargers were whistling and pop-up headlights were blinking. It was the era of the Ferrari F40 and BMW E30 M3, but for many petrolheads, especially those with a hankering for models hailing from Zuffenhausen, there was only one sports car capturing the Zeitgeist. And it wasn’t a Porsche. A FEW YEARS…

The manner in which Baron Fritz ‘Huschke’ Sittig Enno Werner von Hanstein, a young agriculture trainee, became devoted to motor racing — specifically, to endurance runs with a motorcycle and then in cars — was fairly logical. His transformation took place around 1930, when he was nineteen years old. As was the norm, his parents opposed. The Prussian educational style didn’t countenance well-to-do families with spending money, after all. Huschke’s first vehicle (a used Triumph 250 two-wheeler) was therefore part-financed by his girlfriend. Although he could trace his ancestry to the eleventh century, he was not one to stand on principle. His nickname hinted at his ‘hustling’ demeanour, and as a man of action, he later legally adopted the name Fritz-Huschke. His father, Carlo, was a member of landed nobility…

On the facing page, you’ll see a famous photograph depicting twenty-five 917s parked outside the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen on 22nd April 1969. The cars were readied for inspection by officers of the Commission Sportive Internationale (CSI, then the independent competition arm of the FIA), who were sent to inspect and, ultimately, homologate the awe-inspiring racer. The impressive line-up is fronted by 917-001, which first appeared at the Geneva Motor Show only a month earlier. Dressed in white with green detailing on the nose and rear wing, the car is marked by its factory model number. 2026 LA LIT AND TOY SHOW ANNOUNCED Independent Porsche parts retailer, Stoddard, has revealed the date penned for the 2026 LA Lit and Toy Show, the highly anticipated annual event held at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel. Focusing on Porsche and Volkswagen memorabilia, literature, parts and toys, the gathering attracts hundreds of enthusiasts from around the world to buy, sell and trade items, including vehicle parts, vintage posters, books and die-cast models. The 2026 event, which will be held on February 28th, is the forty-second annual LA Lit and Toy Show and promises to be a stonker, with more than three hundred vendor tables already assigned. The green light at the end of the pitlane definitely means ‘go’. A red flag definitely means ‘stop’. Just three laps separate the two. As for orange, it’s the vivid Signal Orange of this ex-works 914/6 GT, ensuring we have the full ‘traffic light’ effect. The problem? The brap, brap, brap of the car’s 250bhp two-litre flat-six on open intakes and open megaphone pipes and, of course, the delicate balancing act between what happens at Goodwood Motor Circuit and the concerns of a twitchy local council, whose noise metres are ready to pounce and send marshals sprinting for the red flag of doom.
