Florian Schneider April 7, 1947 – April 21, 2020 KRAFTWERK CO-FOUNDER and electronic music pioneer Florian Schneider has died just a few days after his seventy-third birthday. The veteran German group confirmed via a statement that Schneider had passed away following “a short cancer disease”. Along with lead singer/keyboard player Ralf Hütter, Schneider formed Kraftwerk in 1970 and remained a member until 2008. With Schneider playing the synthesiser, vocoder, flute and saxophone, as well as adding backing vocals, in the 70s the pair’s creative partnership produced Kraftwerk’s best-known albums, including Autobahn, Radio-Activity, Trans-Europe Express and The Man-Machine (’78). Avoid Go For The Throat POLYDOR, 1981 The second of two forgettable 80s ‘comeback’ albums, this one featuring ‘heavy’ covers of the old Elvis hit All Shook Up (where Marriot suffered the indignity of coming off second-best to the much earlier Rod Stewart version as recorded with the Jeff Beck Group) and the old Small Faces hit Tin Soldier (where he suffered the even greater indignity of coming off second-best to his younger self). The cash-in tour that followed sold so badly it was cancelled, and Humble Pie called it a day for the last time. A sad ending to a once great British band. Moon Martin October 31, 1945 – May 11, 2020 GETTY x2 OKLAHOMA-BORN SINGER-songwriter John David Martin was awarded his nickname ‘Moon’ due to so many of his compositions including the word ‘moon’ in the lyrics. He began his career as part of a rockabilly band called The Disciples. Having relocated to Los Angeles with the group Southwind, for a very short time Martin was a backing musician for Linda Ronstadt, and it was even reported that he had declined a chance to join the fledgling Eagles. He shared stages with big names including Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix in the 60s, before riding the power-pop wave during the following decade. Bob Kulick January 16, 1950 – May 29, 2020 GETTY x2 A “HEARTBROKEN” FORMER Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick has revealed the passing of his elder brother Bob, the guitarist whose playing graced albums by Kiss, Meat Loaf, W.A.S.P., Michael Bolton, Lou Reed and Diana Ross, among many others. The last time one looked, Paul Weller was a sixty-something geezer with a grown-out shaggy mod feather cut: elder statesman chasing that elixir of youth we’d all love to bottle. His latest studio album, available as everything from humble cassette to extra-tracks deluxe package, attempts to balance that artistic conundrum where age-related wisdom meets the refusal to stagnate. Opener Mirror Ball sets the scene: a piano flourish bookends a piece that spins from toughened MOR to experimental discotheque, with Ernie Isley-style guitar and a female chorale meshed by Weller’s ever-confident vocal range. History recalls them as the runt of the litter. Another vinyl double, side one comprised four Marriott-penned rockers, exemplified by Get Down To It; side two, four soul covers, including the brilliant Black Coffee (even better than the Ike & Tina Turner original); side three, four more Marriott originals, this time all-acoustic; side four, three live numbers recorded in Glasgow, including a Honky Tonk Women that would make Mick Jagger cry.
