Best known as a co-founder of Pentangle and also as a foil for singer-songwriter and guitarist John Martyn, bass player Danny Thompson has died at the age of 86. Highly popular within the world of rock, Thompson also worked with Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Talk Talk, Donovan, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, Marianne Faithful, Richard Barbieri and many more.
Thompson was born in Teignmouth, Devon, and the family moved to London when he was six years old. After learning guitar, mandolin, trombone and trumpet at school, he eventually settled on the upright bass. Replacing Jack Bruce in Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated in 1964 enhanced Thompson’s reputation, and he even featured on the session for the theme for the popular animated sci-fi TV series Thunderbirds.
