The Stamford Pottery Market returns to The Stamford Arts Centre in its regular calendar slot in May. On the 1st and 2nd of May, around 25 local potters will display and sell their work at this two-day celebration of ceramics. There will be a huge range of pottery creations to suit everyone, from beautiful domestic ware to quirky ornaments and sculptures. Potters love to talk about their work and how it's been made, so this provides an opportunity for visitors to chat with the makers about their different techniques. There will be a charity raffle of items made by the organising potters in aid of Stamford MindSpace. With free admission and an exciting, fun atmosphere, the organisers hope the pottery market will be well received and supported.…

The MPA is holding an audience with Harriet Coleridge and Dr Robin Wilson on Sunday, June 12th, at the Sundragon Community Pottery in Birmingham. Harriet will be joined by Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Wytham Studio and Department of Anthropology and the Oxford Anagama project, an international forum with active participation from UK and Japanese potters, whose practical research links both materials and processes. The day holds extensive talks, illustrations and examples of different gas and anagama flamefired techniques, Shino glazes, carbon trap shinos and much more from these well-respected professionals. PROJECT ONE These lovely cluster lights look fab as a feature in a living room or lighting a hallway, where they can hang at a longer length Before you begin: This project will be a good exercise in repeat throwing off the hump. It doesn’t matter if each shade is slightly different once thrown –a slight variation adds to the visual interest. However, the more you throw, the better you’ll get at repeating the shape more accurately, and it’s always best to throw more than you need for the cluster, so you have a selection to choose from when you’re putting them together. You can work directly from the wheel head for this project because each light shade will be cut from the top of the mass of clay. Note:…

PROJECT THREE Here’s a lively project to brighten up the miserable last weeks of winter. Your bowl doesn’t need to be as bold in colour as the one here, but it never hurts to go a bit wild at times! PROJECT FOUR Kurinuki is the traditional Japanese method of handbuilding and literally means ‘carving out’. It’s not a difficult way to work but requires an eye for balance of form, so bearing this in mind, now is probably the time to talk about the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi because this project embodies it perfectly. I I always think about what I might write here in the weeks preceding the deadline, sitting at the dining room table to jot down my musings. This month was much the same as usual, and it was all in my head; stories of my trip to London, the making of the lamp base order and other tales. It was all going to be simple. Then the world changed, when Russia invaded Ukraine. I will tell you about those things shortly, but I will begin by talking about a Ukrainian potter called Serhiy Dutka.
