At the time of writing this, we are on the brink of moving into another tiered lockdown, with different parts of the country receiving different guidelines and regulations. What situation we will be in by the time this issue is printed I don’t know, but what I do know is how hard this is for our communities, both the individuals and the businesses that live and thrive beside the sea, and all our lovely readers who love the ocean but may be currently living in cities, and now unable to travel to the seaside, or to draw on all the people and activities that inspire or sustain them. I moved to Appledore in Devon in 1994, although I had visited many times when on family holidays at nearby Instow. The very first art gallery I ever visited was as a child when my uncle took me to The Burton in Bideford, three miles away, and I fell in love with huge, full-bellied harvest jugs, emblazoned with free drawings. As an adult I grew to love Appledore for its shipbuilding heritage. There were many shipyards, making everything from huge oceangoing tankers to small salmon boats. Appledore is on the estuary formed by the meeting of the Rivers Taw and Torridge. The light is wonderful for artists working in any medium. The estuary acts as a mirror, reflecting light upwards, and the colours in my ceramics are noticeably stronger here.…

When Victorian businessman Frederick Walton invented linoleum in 1860, he would never have imagined that his floor covering, made from linseed oil, would soon be used as an artist’s medium; a surface into which a design could be gouged, from which a reverse image is printed. Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso popularised the art form during the 1940s and 50s. If, at school, you progressed from potato prints to lino prints, you might remember tough floor tiles that were difficult to cut. Today, soft polymer sheets made especially for cutting and printing from, are much easier to work with. The medium suits images with strong lines and areas of contrast, so lends itself easily to Christmas themes such as snow on conifers or starry nights. Likewise, coastal scenes work well:…

Looking at Ullapool Harbour today, you’ll see many different boats coming in and out: traditional and modern day boats that fish for lobsters, langoustines and crabs; boats that go out and hand-dive for scallops; trawling boats that come with tonnes of fresh white fish and shellfish; creel boats that go out for months at a time and line-caught white fish boats from Spain. I love Cornwall and I’ve been visiting Newquay (pictured) since the early 1990s, when I came to live in the UK from France. In those days I’d book into a youth hostel and cook my own breakfast and dinner, and meet so many wonderful people. I love physical activity and I learnt to surf at Fistral Beach. I still get out into the ocean for one or two hours when the conditions are right. I prefer surfing in the morning for le réveil musculaire – to wake up my body.
