Growing up on the Isle of Man, I didn’t see any litter on the beaches. Now I’m 68 and I first realised how bad the plastic pollution problem was while walking my dogs on the west coast beach at Kirk Michael, in 2006. I found a huge mass of plastic and over the course of six weekends a friend and I cleared around 30,000 items, mostly plastic bottles. Unless you’re looking for it, it’s not that visible. Lots of plastic gets tangled amongst the rushes at the top of beaches or buried in the sand dunes, including a Coca Cola can dating back to 1987. BOOK A WORKSHOP • Alex’s foraging and cooking courses are held over various weekends throughout the year. Anyone can take part, no previous experience is necessary. Wet weather gear is advised if the forecast is looking dodgy, and walking boots are also advised. Sweet and sour monkfish • 1 tbsp groundnut oil• 800g monkfish fillet, cut into cubes• 4 shallots, sliced• 2 garlic cloves, sliced• 2 lemongrass stalks, trimmed and sliced• 40g brown sugar• 60ml soy sauce• 1 tbsp water• 2 limes, juice only• 1 tbsp Tarantella Organic Tomato Puree Method (serves 4) 1. Place a large wok over a medium heat and add the oil. Fry the monkfish until browned then set aside. 2. Add the shallots, garlic and lemongrass to the pan and stir-fry for a minute or two. Last month, in the first feature of this new series, we explored ‘The Bay’ and learnt what to expect when you see one on a map. This month we are going to discover a very different coastal environment, ‘The Channel’. Defined as a length of water joining two bodies of water, channels can range in scale from the 400-mile-long English Channel (connecting the North Sea with the Atlantic Ocean) to a 100m channel connecting a harbour to the sea. Plastic bottle caps, cigarette stubs and wet wipes, some of the most common litter items to be found across British beaches, have now been joined by a new culprit – PPE. Findings from the MCS’s Great British Beach Clean 2020 reveals almost 30% of beaches cleaned by volunteers were found to have discarded masks and gloves. PPE is a very real threat to animals on sea and land, as they can mistake facemasks and gloves for prey, filling their stomachs with materials that won’t break down. FAST-FLOWING WATER When water from a large body is squeezed through a narrow channel, the pressure increases and currents are accelerated. Swimmers, in particular, should watch out for this as the current will be faster than you can swim and the ebb tide will take you out to sea. CHOPPY SEAS If wind and currents are moving the same way, the water will be calm. But if they oppose each other (most commonly caused by currents changing direction every six hours) the water will suddenly get choppy. A stereotypical feature of this happening is steep waves with crests close together.
