This small yet perfectly curated gallery is making a big splash on the national arts scene. When it comes to great wildlife encounters, most of us are likely to dream of visiting destinations far away from our home shores, yet the waters of the British Isles are frequented by many charismatic animals. And, for a few months every summer, one of the most beautiful sharks in the world takes up residence off the Cornish coast. Even better, anyone can go to visit and swim with them there. The idea of swimming with sharks may sound alarming, however a lot of that apprehension is derived from a misconceived portrayal of these creatures. A visit to stay with Mum in Bude is generally incomplete without a beach clean. There’s no chance of a lie-in on a Saturday at her house, as we’re usually on the beach by 10am, signing in with a local volunteer and being handed litter-pickers and bin bags (or some people bring their own reusable bags to fill up and empty out, ready for use again the following month!). TIDAL UP TO A BARRIER Many of Britain’s rivers are highly developed and man-made obstructions act like a barrier to the tide. The most common barriers are locks and weirs; the Thames is famously tidal up to Teddington Lock, and the Severn bore rumbles all the way past Gloucester until being blocked by Maisemore Weir. To predict how far a river is tidal, follow its path on a map from the sea and expect tides up to a point where there is an obstruction across the river. FAST CURRENTS Currents in rivers are surprisingly swift, especially on the ebb tide when the natural flow of the river is enhanced by the tidal water flowing back out to sea. The first place I bought in Southwold (pictured) was a beach hut, 40 years ago. Now it’s our dream hut where my wife Caroline and I look out to sea. All the family love it. We have a second home in the town too, and since I retired from the court jewellers, Wartski, we try to spend as much time as we can there. There is so much variety, from marshes and river to seafront and cliffs, all entrenched with history. Take the huge and beautiful churches of the area, built with ‘fish money’. I grew up in Cornwall where the ocean was part of my life and, after returning in 2009, I’m happy to call Penzance my home – fully embracing a renewed sense of freedom that comes with life by the sea. The initial urban-rural culture shock was soon replaced by a lust for life and the more time I spent on the coast and in the water, the stronger sense of self I felt. Cornwall has now become one of the very best places in the world to see blue sharks, presenting an incredible wildlife opportunity on our doorstep. Pay them a visit and give these misunderstood animals a chance to show a reality far removed from Jaws. Run by ‘the shark guy’, Charles Hood, a full day boat charter on a RIB accommodating up to five – four visitors plus the skipper is ideal – costs £895 (£995 on weekends). At school, we are taught that rivers always flow down to the sea. It is a basic law of nature and a key part in the water cycle – rainwater runs down a hill and into a river, travelling out to sea before evaporating and condensing into a cloud that rains back on the land and pours into the river, completing the cycle. But it is not entirely true. In fact – as if defying gravity – water in many of Britain’s rivers actually flows inland half the time, travelling uphill. The reason this happens is because these rivers are ‘tidal’, meaning that when the tide rises at sea, water is forced up the river.
