It might well be Chris Howard, a dad-of-three from Norfolk who is walking the entire length of the British coast to raise money for Children in Need. Chris’ journey started from Norfolk’s Heacham Beach in summer 2020 and, after a spell at home due to lockdown earlier this year, he plans to pick up where he left off in Aberystwyth, Wales, with a goal to raise £40k for charity as he treks clockwise around our shores. SHELTER Sea lochs are often connected to the sea by narrow entrances or shallow sills, absorbing the energy of waves so that the inside of the loch remains calm even when a huge storm is blowing out at sea. While not every location will be 100% sheltered from all wind angles, the multitude of islands means there will always be somewhere sheltered nearby. FAST CURRENTS AT THE ENTRANCE As we learnt in the ‘Channels’ feature, fast currents are common in the channels leading in and out of sea lochs. Many people were surprised when I moved to St Ives after 17 years of working and living in New York, but the coast is in my blood as I grew up in Glasgow. Nestled high up in the west coast of Scotland, Loch A’ Chàirn Bhain is a sublime demonstration of the beauty of a Scottish sea loch. Surrounded by mistshrouded mountains, the drama is found at a constriction in the loch where a strikingly graceful concrete bridge sweeps over the narrows below. Unsurprisingly, fast tidal currents can be found here, as huge volumes of water flow in and out of the loch as the tide rises and falls. I was born in London, but my family moved to Hove when I was 10. We used to have a beach hut, and I remember my dad pulling me along the seafront in a little car. Earlier in this series we learned about channels, the gateways between two bodies of water. One of the iconic features of this environment is their fast currents, made by huge volumes of water being forced through the channel every six hours as the tide ebbs and flows. On one side you have the open sea and at the other end is a smaller sea, a harbour, or in the case of Scotland’s west coast, a sea loch. This is the place we are going to explore this month – mind-bogglingly beautiful lakes connected to the sea where a thin layer of dark peaty fresh water sits above the denser seawater.
