In celebration of our seas, the Marine Conservation Society has selected some special imagery to share with coast readers. Some of the pictures come from the charity’s Seasearch initiative, a volunteer diving programme to monitor underwater life, which has been running for 30 years. Clear Atlantic water and year-round surf were two of the main things that persuaded musician and songwriter Brandon Hargrave to relocate to Newquay on the north coast of Cornwall. Two more were the feeling of solace and the sense of creative freedom that this rugged landscape gave him. Brandon first fell in love with the region on family holidays, an escape from his busier home county Hertfordshire. Inverness is at sea level and we live up a hill a mile from the city centre and a 15-minute walk to the seashore. From our house we can see the Moray Firth and the hills of the Black Isle. We moved here in 2000 from the landlocked Midlands; I was born in Aberdeen and wanted to be closer to my grandparents and relatives. It wasn’t a difficult choice to make a new life that combined the benefits of a lively city with vast stretches of wild, deserted coastline and white sandy beaches, just minutes away. OROGRAPHIC LIFT When an onshore wind hits a cliff face it is deflected upwards to create a type of thermal called ‘orographic lift’. A clue that this is happening will be birds gliding along the cliff face and this is often a useful indicator to spot the wind direction, as orographic lift will not happen during an offshore wind. DOWNDRAUGHT The opposite of orographic lift is when an offshore wind creates a type of downdraught. The concept is that when wind blows over the cliff edge it leaves a gap at the cliff’s base where none of the air is getting.
