Just over a fifth of the English coastline sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), including exceptional scenic jewels such as Lulworth Cove and Chesil Beach in Dorset, Freshwater Bay and Tennyson Down on the Isle of Wight, and the Kingsbridge Estuary and Slapton Sands in South Devon. These are places of serenity where natural sounds predominate: the roar of the ocean, the wild call of seabirds, and the whisper of foliage in coastal woodlands. AONBs are striking areas that offer rich natural heritage – soaring chalk and sandstone cliffs, wide sandy beaches, coastlines riddled with fossils, and estuary wetlands teeming with wildlife. They also include our coast’s cultural heritage – including stately homes, pre-historic burial sites, forts, chapels, abbey ruins and gardens, and parkland.
