‘From above, the sea looks quite grey but under the water it’s another story,’ says Tara Leaver, remembering the first time she went wild swimming at Battery Rocks in Penzance with the Battery Belles and Buoys. Dipping her head beneath the waves was a revelation, a hidden world of swaying seaweeds, darting fish, scuttling crabs, creeping starfish and beautiful shells. Soon, she was using a waterproof camera to capture these ‘underwater gardens’, images that have fuelled a whole new body of work that is still evolving. My mum’s Cornish, her family has been here for generations and we used to come here on holiday every year from our home in Sussex. When I grew up, I moved to Australia for 25 years, living on North Stradbroke Island off the coast of Queensland, which ironically, looks very like Cornwall. In 2011 I returned home to help look after Mum and Dad, who had by then retired here. Initially I worked in the café at Tremenheere Sculpture Garden, and two years later, in 2014, I was appointed garden manager. I look after ticket sales, group visits, creative workshops and weddings. We grew up in Portsmouth and all of our family is still there. We live in London now but we enjoy going back. Portsmouth is both a classic seaside resort with a busy seafront, arcades and a pier at Southsea, and a historic port city with the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory on display at the Historic Dockyard.
