Being by the sea really encourages your inner child to be released. If I see sand and hear water I immediately feel that I’m nine years old again. Growing up in Birmingham, we didn’t go abroad often and my first experiences of the seaside were Sunday School trips to Brighton and Blackpool. One of my uncles owned a sandwich shop in Plymouth, so we used to go on an annual holiday there to visit the seaside. I grew up in the West Midlands, though we used to holiday on the south coast of Cornwall. I studied fashion and sportswear design at Falmouth University and now I’m happy to call Falmouth my home. I started The Organic Lab in 2019, specialising in utility work wear using natural and responsibly made fabrics. The venture is a creative outlet with sustainability and circularity in mind. We renovated Luna in a boatyard on Hayling Island, so navigating the Solent to Bembridge was our first ‘crossing’ in her, working the tides and dodging super-tankers heading for Southampton. A quick glance at the chart shows that Bembridge, on the north-east corner of the Isle of Wight, is a perfect first stop from Chichester Harbour, so on a crisp October morning we set a course for the iconic St Helens Fort just offshore. Back in ancient Greece and Rome, the technique of submerging grapes in seawater was common, a means of both washing the grapes and imparting a unique flavour to the resulting wine.
