When I first encountered Martin Dorey many moons ago he was a fizzing, larger-than-life ball of energy who made a memorable impression on me. In 1985, Annie and Huw Davies founded the Harbour Lights restaurant in the village of Porthgain on the Pembrokeshire coast, six miles from St David’s. Keen art collectors, they started exhibiting the work of local artists on the restaurant walls and by 2001, decided to turn their award-winning eatery into a full-time art gallery. Twenty years on, their daughter Katy is at the helm, helped by her cousin Douglas, who does the picture framing. “These days, we have over 30 artists exhibiting from all over Wales. Most of the inspiration comes from the wild and rugged landscape that North Pembrokeshire is famous for,” Katy says. Fowey Festival of Art and Literature is organised by the du Maurier Society and this year marks the 25th festival. Daphne du Maurier lived across the river as a child during the summers and made her home in the area when she married. She drew her inspiration from many Cornish locations for her books – Rebecca, Frenchman’s Creek, Jamaica Inn and The House on the Strand. For much of the 20th century, children on the Hebridean island of Lewis were taught not to go swimming. “Don’t go in the sea,” Immerse Hebrides founder Norma MacLeod was told over and over again. Jeremy Vine is momentarily blindsided when I ask him what his favourite stretch of coastline is. “Er, can I have two?” he asks. I have always had a deep connection to the ocean and the wild free space that exists on the coast; its energy and ferocity, its deep calm and timelessness. I certainly crave this in life. I left England to travel and adventure at 18 and dreamed of sailing the seven seas. I was lucky enough to land incredible jobs working as deck crew on numerous old tall ships and, not surprisingly, my love of being on the ocean grew. Fast forward a few years, with a degree in renewable energy engineering and some time spent working in developing countries with small communities, I returned to Cornwall to work in renewables.
