There truly IS something about Cornwall, isn’t there? I live in Devon and yet, despite the somewhat light-hearted ‘rivalry’ between the two counties, I am forced to admit there is definitely something magical and distinct about the Duchy. Maybe it’s the Cornish elements in my DNA. In recent years I have discovered family links with Cornwall and, more significantly, the Isles of Scilly, stretching back to the 16th century. Indeed, my great-great-great-grandmother Eliza Nicholas is buried close to the pretty St Mary’s Old Church on St Mary’s. Perhaps this explains why I have such an affinity with the county. Swimming outdoors in all weathers has become something of a trend, but I’ve never been an enthusiast. So it’s a challenge to take the plunge at the Jubilee Pool in Penzance on a freezing December day and a surprise to discover I’m enjoying myself. There’s a significant addendum to my joy as the water in the saltwater pool is geothermally heated and while the pool crew are apologetic that the temperature is only 28°C rather than the usual 35, it’s plenty warm enough for me. My friendly fellow bathers say they love their regular swims and one casually mentions she’d rather be in the adjoining unheated sea water lido but has chosen the more temperate option as she’s brought her children with her. Growing up in London you can’t look out of your window in the morning and see the sea creeping up the beach like you can in many places of the world so I think that it starts to live in your heart all the more when you get to be on the coast just a few times a year. That’s how it was when I was a boy and it has never changed. Keen conservationists and birdwatchers, Liz and Steve Harris were drawn to the unique landscapes and rich birdlife of the Norfolk coast in the 1970s. For many years they pursued careers in teaching and wildlife conservation respectively. Then came the opportunity to create a wildlife art gallery. After a year of designing and creating a gallery space in a converted barn near Holt, BIRDscapes opened its doors on October 1, 2005. Joined, since then, by son Peter and daughter Emma, the gallery, one of the largest in the area, has two spacious rooms, one dedicated to original prints and the other to paintings, with sculptures dotted throughout. The official bathing season is almost upon us! Hurrah! It’s time to reach into the back of the cupboard for that dusty changing robe and give those crusty budgie smugglers a rinse before dashing to the shoreline like a disentangled seal pup released back into the wild. That’s how the Environment Agency and some water companies see it. That’s why they don’t bother with the expense of testing water quality or monitoring some sewage outfalls in winter. As far as they are concerned, Britain’s bathers are fair weather wimps who shrivel at the first sign of a chill and don’t come out again until late spring. But we know the truth, don’t we? Wholesome and kinship. Those are the words to define St Davids (Tyddewi), Britain’s smallest city at Wales’s westernmost point.
