NOT DIAMOND GEEZERS, BUT GAFFERS… Sutton Harbour in Plymouth is gearing up to host the south coast stage of the Round Britain Cruise to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Old Gaffers’ Association (OGA) as it turns 60 this year. Members of the association will be heading to Sutton Harbour from May 10-12. The gathering of enthusiasts will see classic boats, both large and small, sail into Plymouth, when visitors to Sutton Harbour will be able to see around 20 vessels from the quayside. A collective of north Devon artists recently identified the failing of traditional education to provide them with a solid basis on which to start a business or find their creative outlet. There is a growing awareness among them of the need to have a voice, a presence, and a desire to find expression within our society for those who feel isolated and unheard in the rural coastal areas of the UK. Enter the New Atlantic Wave, an upcoming art collective, promoted by not-for-profit organisation ArtMakers, to provide a platform for artists and makers across north Devon. For decades, Lou Newlands worked as a PR in the field of sailing, moving to the Isle of Wight when she began representing Ellen MacArthur in 2002. It was after a stint with the Volvo Ocean Race in 2017-18 that she decided to make a radical career change. 1 FAIRGROUND ATTRACTIONS Caravanserai is Brighton Fringe’s newest pop-up outdoor festival site - built out of repurposed caravans, with vintage fairground waltzers and where hoopla stalls and shoot-out galleries become bars. It’s the vision of artist Pete Bateman and was established at Camp Bestival in 2013. I truly believe paths are one of our nation’s most precious assets. Whether cresting coastal cliffs or exploring inland, they connect us with so much beauty and wonder. For me, they also bring hard but rewarding work. While our paths are sometimes taken for granted, a lot of effort is put in by Ramblers volunteers like me to look after them. From clearing obstructions and cutting back overgrowth to installing new bridges, boardwalks and gates, we keep paths open and accessible for all to enjoy. The sun rises over the Couple sculpture by Sean Henry on the North Sea coast at Newbiggin Bay in Northumberland. The striking bronze and steel artwork lies 300m out to sea and was completed in August 2007 and erected as part of a £10m refurbishment project in the seaside town, which also included 500,000 tonnes of new sand for the beach, a new breakwater in the bay, improvements to the promenade and a new playground.
