Long before Europeans arrived in North America, the people who became known as the Great Sioux Nation had formed a confederation of closely related tribes. They called themselves the Oceti Sakowin (People of Seven Council Fires). They consisted of three regional groups, each of which spoke a regional dialect of a common language. The words used to refer to those dialects are the words used to identify the three groups. The four Santee tribes were known as the Eastern Dakotas. The Yankton and the Yanktonai tribes were called the Nakotas or the Middle Dakotas. The largest group was the Western Lakotas or Tetons, which consisted of seven bands: the Miniconjou, the Brule, the Blackfoot, the Sans Arc, the Two Kettle, the Oglala, and the Hunkpapa.
