Not far from the World Heritage Site Archaeological Border Complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke, an important Viking trading centre, a metal detectorist in training has discovered a hoard that is believed to be around 800 years old. Nicki Andreas Steinmann was learning how to use a metal detector with his instructor when the pair stumbled upon gold artefacts and coins near the site in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. After the initial discovery, the Archaeological State Office was informed, and a controlled excavation was undertaken. With the consent of the farmer, a 4m² area was excavated around the site. New Zealand Post have launched a range of coins to celebrate the coronation, each featuring a new effigy of King Charles III created by Wellington-based designer and illustrator Stephen Fuller. Issued by NZ Post under license from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and produced in Germany by BH Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt GmbH, the New Zealand coins feature a selection of portraits of the King, with each coin featuring the same effigy. This portrait, personally approved by the King, has been created specifically for commemorative coins and it is unlikely that the same design will be used on the country’s circulation coinage. After an involuntary two-year Covid-19 break, NUMISMATA took place again from 4 to 5 February and proved a celebration for collectors from all over Europe. Attracting approximately 3,500 visitors, everyone who entered the hall at the 53rd NUMISMATA was mesmerised by the atmosphere, with dealers’ tables at the Munich show crowded well into the afternoon. Baldwin’s 109th auction on 9 March featured ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins, along with British, Scottish and world coins, as well as commemorative medals and tokens. One of the auction’s highlights was a proof of an 1847 Queen Victoria (1837–1901) Gothic Crown struck in pure silver, which takes its name from its medieval style (lot 282). A crowned bust of the Queen facing left with braided hair appeared on the obverse, with initials of the engraver, William Wyon RA (WW), appearing incuse at the base of the bust within the trefoil and arc border. Archaeologists have just made an important discovery: a skeleton suspected to be that of one of England’s medieval kings, Richard III. The life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, who served as Canada’s monarch and head of state for 70 years is being remembered on a collection of precious metal coins from Royal Canadian Mint which will be released over the course of 2023. The obverse of each coin in the collection is double-dated 1952-2022, with those dates separated by a Tudor rose. This inscription accompanies an overlay of the four effigies of Queen Elizabeth II that have appeared on Canadian coins since 1953. Pobjoy Mint is celebrating the accession of His Majesty King Charles lll with a new 50p coin featuring the Royal Cypher. The coin is legal tender of the British Antarctic territory, and is a limited issue of 1,950. The design on features His Majesty’s cypher surrounded by a rose, representing England; a daffodil, representing Wales; a thistle, representing Scotland, and shamrocks, representing Northern Ireland. A hoard of 1,056 Roman silver coins has been purchased by Heritage Doncaster, on behalf of the people of the City of Doncaster. Said to be one of the largest coin hoards found in the region, spanning approximately 192 years of Roman rule in Britain, the Norton Hoard was discovered by a metal detectorist in the parish of Norton, Doncaster, and reported as treasure to Portable Antiquities Scheme, in 2018. Now the coins have been purchased thanks to support from the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, The Headley Museums Archaeological Acquisitions Fund and the Friends of Doncaster Museums, with match funding from a private bequest to Heritage Doncaster. Before the euro was introduced in 2001, Spanish people used currency in pesetas (abbreviated Pta, Pts or Ptas). In earlier times 1 pta was equivalent to 100 Centimos, before inflation abandoned coins in centimos. In the 1990s the Spanish state mint and printers, Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre (FNMT) produced a number of special issues in the nominal value of 25 pts. They were in aluminium bronze, small sized (19.5 mm) with a weight of 4.25 grams. The Royal Australian Mint have issued a commemorative $1 coin to celebrate 100 years of Australia’s Legacy organisation, which supports tens of thousands of widows who have lost their loved ones during war or peacekeeping missions. According to The Royal Mint, the coin collection has proved popular around the world, with collectors and Harry Potter enthusiasts from 86 different countries purchasing at least one coin from the range. The Royal Mint recently unveiled a range of commemorative coins to celebrate the Coronation including a 50p and £5 coin. A rare gold coin, known as the ‘Eid Mar’ (Ides of March), which celebrates the assassination of Julius Caesar, was returned to Greece in March. The coin was among 29 items, with a total value of $20 million, returned by investigators in New York, who had determined it had been looted and fraudulently put up for sale in 2020. Valued at $4.2 million, the coin features a portrait of Marcus Junius Brutus, who, along with other Roman senators, murdered Julius Caesar on the Ides of March in 44BC. According to experts, Brutus had the coins minted in gold and silver to celebrate Caesar’s downfall. A silver penny dating back to the reign of King Offa, the famous eighth-century ruler of Mercia, has been donated by its owner to Hereford Museum. The 1,200-year-old rare coin was handed to Hereford Museum on Tuesday, 28 February by Dr Jerry Davis, who bought the coin at auction in 2022. Jerry then offered the coin to the museum at minimal cost. Helped by public donations received through the Herefordshire Museum Service Support Group, the museum was able to purchase the coin. In time, the coin will go on display in Hereford’s state-of-the-art museum and art gallery on Broad Street when it opens in 2025. A new exhibition, organised by Jersey Heritage and called Searching for Jersey’s Celts – Unearthing Le Catillon II the World’s Largest Celtic Coin Hoard, is now on display in Jersey. Housed in the newly refurbished archaeology gallery at La Hougue Bie on the island, the exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey 2,000 years ago. Many items in the exhibition have never been publicly displayed before. Coins, gold neck torcs and metal ingots from the Le Catillon II hoard are on included, as well as a rare leather purse, which is the only known Iron Age example of its kind. The monetary system of the Edo period – specifically Tokugawa Shogunate which yielded some of the largest and most stunning gold coins in the world in that period. After the victory of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) in 1600, in the battle of Sekigahara, the country was united under one ruler who formed the Shogunate system. Tokygawa Ieyasu thus became the first Shogun. He was one of the three Great Unifiers of Japan, along with his former lord Oda Nobunaga and fellow Oda subordinate Toyotomi Hideyoshi. For over 250 years, from 1600 to 1868, warlords known as Tokugawa Shoguns ruled over Japan which was divided into fiefdoms, each controlled by a local daimyo, or Samurai lord. The Iraq Levies can trace their history back to 1915 when a local Arab scout force was formed. After the Cairo Conference of 1921 to discuss the increasingly complex issues in the Middle East, the Arab elements of the Levies transferred to the newly-created Iraq Army and it was decided to enlist Assyrians. Recognised for their discipline, loyalty and courage, they made up over half the total force. When the Colonial Office transferred control of the Levies to the RAF in 1928, it had become manned entirely by Assyrians. Liechtenstein mint CIT have created a series of coins celebrating Mont-Saint-Michel, the well known landmark off the coast of Normandy. The gold, silver, and copper coins have been issued on behalf of the Cook Islands, and show a stylised image of the French landmark on the reverse, with an engraving of the landmark from a different angle on the obverse, together with a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and a small map of France. The Edith Kanaka’ole quarter is the seventh coin in the four-year series that celebrates the accomplishments and contributions made by women who have shaped our the USA’s history and helped pave the way for generations who followed.
