HARMONIC FUNCTION IN MINOR KEYS
Tonic, dominant and predominant chord families still exist for minor keys as well as major ones, but there are some differences owing to the different diatonic chords that you get when you harmonise a minor scale. These are i, iiº, III, iv, V, VI, VII, where i, III and VI have tonic function, iv, iiº, and sometimes VI have predominant function, and V and VII have dominant function.

Using inversions is a good way of smoothing out chord progressions so they don’t ‘jump around’ the keyboard too much, which can occur if you only use chords that are in root position, ie, have the root note at the bottom of the stack. For example, instead of having a tonic chord of C major…
