I cut my teeth on the Atari 2600 and ZX Spectrum, and I remained a hardened joystick waggler throughout the 16-bit era and on into the 90s PC days. The popularity of hardware-aping processors shows no sign of abating, and HoRNet’s new console emulation plugin contributes further to the genre. AnalogStage (VST/AU/AAX), though, doesn’t emulate a specific classic processor but rather gives a choice of op amp, transistor or tube saturations, each adding its own character when driven using the Gain control. The amateur producer may think that the process of arrangement only involves putting the correct events at the right place from left to right on the timeline. This does form the bare bones of a song’s structure, but the pros go deeper into the process and fine-tune balances, levels and segues with careful automation. Drawing in automatic parameter curves on your DAW’s timeline is the modern day equivalent of old-school producers moving mixing desk parameters on the fly – a process known as ‘riding the faders’. If you’re using EZdrummer, a scripted Kontakt library or any other drums-orientated sample playback instrument, your vintage kit probably includes analogue-style effects and tools with which to further ‘age’ the sound of its already old-fashioned tubs. If, on the other hand, you’re just using the clean, modern-sounding stock drum kit included with your DAW, you’ll need to put in a bit of extra work to send it back in time. First, there’s the sound of the drums themselves. Sitting immediately before the Resampler, the Approximative filter is an adjustable filter for removing some or all harmonic content above the Nyquist frequency (half of the Resampler’s frequency). This filtering process is used to prevent aliasing, and by allowing control over the cutoff, Decimort 2 can tailor the aliasing reduction amount and thus reproduce different hardware systems more accurately than its predecessor. Or you might simply tailor it for a desired effect when mixing. The audible result of this control is to soften the harshness and crunch introduced to high frequencies when down-sampling. Of course, sometimes you might want that harshness, but many high-end 80s samplers used such filtering to achieve a much warmer analogue-style sound. Key to Peak Rider’s behaviour is its selection of operating modes. There are four of them, each with a particular processing style. Exact mode compresses/expands the input signal to precisely match the dynamic shape of the trigger signal, while NoBoost only compresses the input signal when it’s louder than the trigger. Duck is the most flexible of the four modes, with the amount of compression or expansion applied set using the Gain controls for each band. Applying negative Gain in Duck Mode achieves the classic ducking effect, while positive Gain values expand (boost the level of) the signal. Rounding things off is Limit mode. Transient processing is an essential weapon in the modern producer’s armoury, and here’s another tantalising option for you to try: Audio Assault’s Transfreak (VST/AU/AAX). 01 DEVELOPMENT PREP It might sound obvious, but the most foolproof way to ensure you’ll be able to develop and progress an arrangement is by creating your track elements with this in mind from the start. For instance, when programming a synth or bass part at the initial loop stage, have a play with various parameters while bearing in mind how these tweaks can be incorporated into an arrangement. Perhaps dramatically opening the filter cutoff at the end of eight bars will provide a much-needed change, or reducing a bass synth’s filter envelope amount will pull down the part’s ‘twang’ and cool things down mid-track. One of Fix Flanger’s best features is its VSO (Variable Speed Oscillator) mode. This emulates tape flanging using master and slave tape machines, with the big VSO knob determining the relative speed of the slave machine, from Slower on the left to Faster on the right, with the final section of the Slower travel actually delivering a machine Halt effect. How this behaves is dependent on the Servo setting, and bearing in mind that you can also blend in the Auto Sweep effect, things can get pretty complex. A simpler option is to only use Manual Sweep, and chase the zero pass through point (the central Null point on the Flange meter), just as you would with real tape machines. EMT’s 140 plate established them as the top dogs in artificial reverb. Their efforts to produce a more compact device led to the 240 portable ‘gold’ plate, followed in 1976 by the 250 digital reverb. With its large, pod-like floor-standing design and paddle controls, the ludicrously expensive 250 was hardly compact. The delay, phasing, chorus, echo and special ten-second ‘Space’ reverb options also meant it was overpowered for many users, so the decision to extract the reverb into a simpler unit of its own (the 244) was a good one. The 244 was closely followed by the more flexible 245, and then the more ambitious 246. “In Case of Emergency”, in the context of this plugin, refers to the audio crisis of a distorted audio file. Created by Sonic Studio and Legendary Audio, ICE’s aim is to clean up less-than-stellar sounds by eliminating distortion, remedying overloading and clipping, and reducing harshness. First, the plugin’s Monitor mode helps locate problem areas in a recording, and then the type of processing and amount to apply can be dialled in. Ableton Live Session View In its initial incarnation, Ableton’s Live was intended primarily as a means by which to play back loops on the fly in its Session View. Over the years though, it has grown into a full-fledged DAW with all the trimmings, including a proper Arrangement View where audio and MIDI parts may be arranged and rearranged in a linear fashion, just as they can in more conventional applications. Ableton have provided a few very cool options for building arrangements in the Arrangement View, though, and the most obvious is to simply record a Session View performance, launching audio and MIDI clips on the fly. Ronan Macdonald Having previously served as Editor of drummer’s bible Rhythm as well as Computer Music, Ronan is clearly the right man for this particular gig. He’s been playing drums for over 30 years and making music with computers since the 90s. The shaker family of percussion instruments includes anything that qualifies as a sealed container full of beads, seeds or any other ‘rattly particles’, shaken back and forth in a repetitive motion to generate a rhythm – from the simple egg shaker to the intriguing caxixi. Indeed, you can make your own shaker by filling a Pringles tube with corn kernels! The vast majority of the time, shakers serve a supportive role rather than being employed as solo instruments, although you’d be amazed at the pyrotechnics a skilled player…

15 processors are available to the three effects modules: Low-pass, High-pass, Bandpass and Band-stop filters; Chorus, Phaser, Barber-pole Phaser; Positive and Negative Flangers; Bit-depth Reducer, Sample-rate Reducer, Analog Drive, Circuit-bent Filter, Frequency Shifter and Pitch Shifter. Every effect has just one control – Cutoff for the filters and Speed for the chorus, for example – since they only operate on individual slices and so are meant for very brief deployment. Each effect also has an Animation (modulation) section, featuring three envelope shapes (Ramp, Up/Down and Random). You can adjust the modulation amount/depth (positive or negative) and, crucially, set whether the modulation is re-triggered with each slice or plays out as the slice repeats. Valhalla Plate’s original seven stereo in/ stereo out Modes range from conventionally ‘plate-like’ emulations (Chrome, Steel, Cobalt and Brass) to denser options more reminiscent of reverb chambers (Aluminium, Copper and Unobtanium). They are, however, all steel plate algorithms at heart, despite their various metallic names. Indeed, notable by its omission is EMT’s 240 gold foil plate, as the one Costello and Gunn tested didn’t stand up against the 140s.
