A few weeks ago, I went fly-fishing for the first time in the Blue Ridge Mountains. My husband, children, and I took to Caney Fork Creek just outside of Cashiers, North Carolina, with the friendly folks at Brookings Anglers. Why We Love Them Their Homespun History: American quilting is rooted in the 18th century’s needlework tradition. The company soon relocated to St. Louis, where it produced hand-operated—and, later, electric—butter churns until 1930. When Audra Lawlor and her husband, Gerry, left New York City in 2011 for five acres on Washington’s San Juan Islands, she wasn’t sure how they were going to pay the mortgage. “But when I saw the property, with its raised-bed gardens and a stand of orchard trees, I just knew we needed to be here,” says Audra.
