I will never tire of hearing about the connections Country Living readers feel to their homes, whether they thoughtfully restored a family farmhouse (pg. 10) or bought a post-and-beam barn sight unseen (pg. 74). I particularly love how reader Bambi Costanzo speaks of the cozy West Virginia cottage (pg. 82) she’s loved for two-plus decades: “I hope that, many years from now, a certain scent or sound or the sight of old pitchers full of flowers will remind the kids of their childhood in this little house.” Her words are a refreshing reminder that creating a home really comes down to reinforcing a feeling—of comfort, of belonging, of familiarity. Drafting Stool WHAT TO KNOW: In 1897, the Toledo-based Uhl brothers founded their “Uhl’s Cycle Emporium” and began repairing and manufacturing bicycles until the growth of the auto industry lessened their demand. They pivoted to furniture, producing a range of items from ice-cream parlor seating to school and typewriter desks. In 1904, they officially established the Toledo Metal Furniture Co., quickly becoming a leading furniture manufacturer and building on the strength of the American steel industry. Suds Up Contrary to popular belief, using a little soap is just fine, as today’s dish soaps tend to be milder than cleaning products of the past. Dab a little on a sponge—either side’ll do—and scrub. Dry with Heat After patting gently with a towel, place the pan on the stovetop and turn the burner on low; dry completely, about one minute. If your piece isn’t stovetop-safe, place it in a warm oven until dry. The pine corner cabinet—a Facebook Marketplace score—came from a Pennsylvania farmhouse that had been boarded up for decades; it now holds Bambi’s quilts and pitchers.
