My father is from Sonora, Mexico. But her time with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and the renown she achieved as The Peerless Lady Wingshot in the show make her an important aspect of his story anywhere it’s told. Annie and her husband, Frank Butler, were contracted to perform with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West in April 1885 and were headlining sharpshooters for most of the next 17 years. American Indians Arts Festival Saturday morning breakfast was on the house for members of the Autry Museum of the American West, a tasty treat to kick off the annual American Indian Arts Festival in Los Angeles. Patrons needed their energy to peruse the works of more than 160 Native artists from more than 40 tribes, offering unique jewelry, pottery, blankets, paintings, sculptures, and much more. In 1954, actress Katy Jurado made history by becoming the first Latina ever to receive an Academy Award nomination for her role in Broken Lance, a milestone accomplishment at the time. Recognized worldwide for her rare beauty and fiery screen persona, Jurado immersed herself in a variety of film roles — she is associated with some of the most iconic westerns of the 1950s. Jurado was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, (real name María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García) and brought up in prosperity. He gazes upward, focusing on something just beyond the stretch of the canvas, possibly something entirely invisible. Harking back to turn-of-the-century impressionism, the canvas is bathed in light.
